GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Environmental science at GCC focuses on the scientific study of human interactions with the environment-- biological, physical and chemical -- with a core commitment to resource conservation and sustainability. The science department's mission includes building scientific literacy in all liberal arts students and providing a rigorous scientific foundation for students who wish to pursue science and engineering careers. Focused "campus as classroom" initiatives strive to expand hands-on learning opportunities on the GCC campus, such as in the 80-acre forest, wetlands, greenhouse, teaching gardens, building facilities, and energy installations. Students come to learn systems thinking, scientific principles, and hands-on skills important for sustainability careers, research, and transfer.
We seek a full-time faculty member to coordinate a rigorous Environmental Science program relevant for the needs and professional opportunities of our region. This person will work closely with colleagues and community partners to help the college and our citizens better understand the theoretical meaning of sustainability and the real-world knowledge and skills needed to implement it.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Greenfield Community College is located in the beautiful and historic Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, between the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and the fertile farmland of the Connecticut River watershed. GCC is a small, publicly supported community college of approximately 2,200 students with an average age of 27. Known for the caring and supportive attitude of the faculty and staff, and for the broad support it enjoys from the surrounding community, the college is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In addition to a strong Liberal Arts focus, the College offers a wide variety of innovative and successful programs including Farm and Food Systems, Renewable Energy, Nursing, Fine Arts, Gender and Women's Studies, and Outdoor Leadership. Students can learn in varied environments, from traditional classrooms, to distance learning, peer tutoring, one-on-one faculty-student advising, workforce development, and learning-communities that address specific needs and interests. Close to fifty percent of Greenfield Community College students transfer to four-year colleges. Much of the College has recently undergone a multi-million dollar renovation that earned LEED Gold certification for its sustainability features. At GCC sustainability has many definitions, but underlying each is the desire to achieve and maintain the environmental, economic and social well-being of our world, both today and for future generations. Sustainability influences the way our courses are taught, the way our buildings and landscapes grow and change, and the way we live and work in them. Greenfield Community College actively encourages and provides opportunities for leadership and professional development.
GCC is actively looking to recruit diverse faculty and staff to meet the needs of our student body. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Those with alternative experiences related to any of the minimum qualifications can apply and should submit an equivalency statement.
