Detailed Job Description

The Instructor will report directly to the Dean of the School and will provide 15 credit hours of instruction per semester with a primary teaching load in the Early Childhood Education, Teacher Education and the Alternative Licensure programs(ALP).

Duties & Responsibilities

Course load will potentially include additional courses in Education content areas such as; Preparation for the NMTA, Introduction to Teaching and Special Education as well as, Teaching Reading, Foundations of Education, Effective teaching Practices, Elementary Teaching Methods as well as, special needs and gifted courses. This position will instruct classes; organize instruction and plan student activities; assesse student work; calculate grades. Develops and designs curriculum in a variety of delivery modes. Responsibilities include;

• Prepare and Teach 15 credits of Education courses per semester
• Develop online Education courses
• Perform student consultations and advisement
• Attend appropriate workshops and trainings
• Report to the Director of the Education Department
• Help conduct ALP candidate interviews
• Evaluate new candidate ALP application packets
• Monitor Teacher Education and ALP web pages
• Develop public relations material as needed
• Maintain documentation of ALP coursework and program development to address National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards, as utilized by the New Mexico Public Education Department.
• Ongoing evaluation of Teacher Education Degrees and Certificates.
Instruction times will include day and evening courses. May instruct at the main campus, east campus (Aztec) or the west campus (Kirtland).


A Master’s Degree or higher in teacher education, or a closely related field plus two years of related full-time teaching/educational experience in a post-secondary setting is required. Teaching experience at a community college, with demonstrated interest in creating student-centered, interactive courses, both in face-to-face and online environments, is preferred. The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher with a strong commitment to the community college experience and learning college philosophy. The candidate should value diversity and have experience teaching in multicultural and adult student environments.

Starting Salary

Commensurate with educational background and teaching experience according to placement on the San Juan College faculty salary pay-band.
