Quinnipiac University invites applications for the position of Director of Counseling Services. The Director of Counseling Services is a member of the Division of Student Affairs and reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs.
The primary responsibilities of this position include: implementing University policies and procedures for identifying and serving the needs of distressed students, managing mental health related emergencies, implementing the Medical Leave of Absence policy, and supervision of mental health professionals.
Preemptive Assessment Team
Chair the Preemptive Assessment Team and manage efforts to identify and follow-up with students of concern.
Collaborate with faculty, administrative staff and parents to address the unique needs of students and help them achieve their goals at the University.
Provide educational and training programs to members of the University community to help them effectively identify and assist students of concern.
Maintain confidential student record database.
Mental Health Emergencies and Medical Leaves of Absence
Manage the response to mental health emergencies according to University policies and procedures while insuring that the rights of the individual are balanced against the rights of the community.
Implement the Medical Leave policy when appropriate and collaborate with medical personnel, mental health professionals, parents and students in helping students prepare to return to the University.
Work in partnership with the University’s consulting psychiatrist on medical leaves of absence.
Respond to emergencies as appropriate and necessary.
Supervise five full time mental health professionals.
Oversee the services provided in the Counseling Center ensuring the highest levels of care.
Other Primary Responsibilities
Support Division of Student Affairs programs.
Serve on various Divisional and Institutional committees.
Preferred candidates will have 10 or more years of experience in administration at institutions of Higher Education or a clinical setting.
An advanced degree in Higher Education, Administration or APRN with mental health experience is ideal.
Candidates must possess knowledge of and experience with mental health issues and treatment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to: discuss policy and apply it effectively in high pressure situations with faculty, staff and students, interact with students and parents in crisis, and create written documents that effectively communicate application of policy to individual situations.
Successful candidates will demonstrate experience in supervision, critical thinking, crisis management, decision-making and an understanding of the mission and policies of the institution.
