The Spokane-based Applied Sciences Laboratory (ASL) of the Institute for Shock Physics (ISP) at Washington State University is seeking a Chemical Engineer (Administrative/Professional staff member) to support research activities in the physical sciences and engineering, with an emphasis on materials synthesis and scale-up processes.
The Chemical Engineer position supports a wide variety of research activities. The list below is a representative sample of those activities.

The overall responsibilities for this position are as follows:

  • Using established procedures, synthesize inorganic and organic materials.
  • Develop scale-up synthesis processes for inorganic and organic materials.
  • Contribute to early stage research and development of inorganic and organic materials.
  • Design, conduct and analyze research experiments, including sample preparation and materials characterization.
  • Take the lead in managing chemical safety procedures and protocols for ASL, including maintaining the chemical inventory and implementing appropriate safety policies and procedures. In addition, participate in the operation and maintenance of equipment used for materials synthesis and characterization.
  • Prepare reports and publications, as needed.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. A Master’s degree in an relevant scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required work experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. or higher Degree in Chemical Engineering or related field and some related experience.
  • Strong experimental background and hands-on experience with Materials Characterization techniques, such as SEM/EDS, FTIR, GCMS, or UV-Vis Spectroscopy.
  • Experience with environmental aging based upon ASTM procedures.
