We are seeking a confident, results-driven major gift fundraiser for the Carson College of Business who has a sincere appreciation for connecting people with their philanthropic interests. This position requires a self-motivated, innovative thinker who will build sustainable engagement and support for the programs and vision of the college. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of soliciting and closing major gifts and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community.
Washington State University (WSU) finished the one billion dollar campaign for Washington State on June 30, 2015 and has started preparations for the next comprehensive campaign. As part of this effort, the Carson College Office of Development is building a model fundraising infrastructure, one that will meet the growing needs of the college and support the University’s strategic plan. Under direction of the Director of Development for Carson, the Associate Director of Major Gifts is responsible for major gift fundraising for the Carson College of Business, including identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The major emphasis of this position is the solicitation of gifts of $25,000 or more from individuals and organizations. The Associate Director will have an important role in building a fundraising strategy for the Carson College during the preparation of a University-wide comprehensive campaign.
The Associate Director is also accountable to the Vice President for Advancement at the WSU Foundation for the establishment of fundraising goals and accomplishing these goals; engages the Dean, staff and faculty, as necessary and appropriate, in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift prospects; manages a pool of 125-150 prospects and makes 10-12 visits per month, some of which are made jointly with the Director, faculty, and other development staff; plans, recommends, and carries out appropriate solicitation strategies; guides individual faculty when needed within this context; coordinates stewardship reports and activities for assigned prospects with appropriate members of the college; assists with Alumni Engagement & Annual Giving and College-related activities and events with a major donor component. The Associate Director attends college events, for the purpose of cultivating and stewarding prospects and donors; travels both regionally and nationally, as necessary to cultivate, solicit, or steward prospects and donors.
Positions require a Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which includes eighteen (18) months of full-time fundraising experience which includes demonstrated success of face-to-face solicitation of gifts of $1000 or more, mass market fundraising, event planning and management, donor stewardship, fund tracking and acknowledgements to donors OR comparable experience and one (1) year of managerial experience. Comparable experience totaling four (4) years of progressively responsible full time experience in sales, marketing, public relations or advancement experience which has involved direct face-to-face contact with clients, customers, prospective customers and members of the public may be substituted for the experience requirements. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
Fundraising experience at a comprehensive public or private research university.
Experience coordinating giving programs.
Experience with volunteer boards.
Knowledge of alumni/donor databases.
Understanding of and experience in dealing with deferred gifts and estate planning issues.
Ability to manage multiple projects and set priorities.
