Detailed Job Description

Bates College invites applications for the position of Programmer/Analyst.  The Programmer/Analyst is responsible for the analysis, design, development, implementation and maintenance of systems, applications and reports to support the business and management needs of the College.  The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, a customer-service orientation, familiarity with the team decision-making process and excellent problem-solving abilities.  This individual will be innovative, resourceful, enjoy streamlining and improving processes and be motivated to make a difference in the operations of the College.

Bates College has implemented all modules of Ellucian’s Banner system.  Centralized administrative database development and management is a key element in Information and Library Services support of the mission of the College.  The programmer/analyst will work on projects independently as well as on teams and provide technical knowledge to ensure the future viability of computer-based systems.


Required Qualifications:  Significant programming experience.  Mastery of a programming language such as PL/SQL, PHP, Java or Python.  Demonstrated ability to master other languages.  Be able to think creatively and logically, handle multiple priorities, resolve problems, identify tasks, and develop modular programs. Experience developing web applications and solid understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Demonstrated ability to determine project timelines and complete projects on time. Have excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to create a collaborative relationship with customers, and to convey computing concepts effectively to non-technical users.

Desired Qualifications: Significant programming experience in Oracle, Unix or Linux, and PL/SQL. Experience with a sophisticated reporting tool.  Experience with Maximo or other computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).  Experience with Drupal or WordPress.  A background in higher education and a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field would be beneficial.
