Berklee College of Music is seeking applications for the position of Chair of the Music Therapy Department. As one of the largest music therapy programs in the United States, Berklee offers distinctive instruction at both undergraduate and graduate levels taught by faculty with diverse philosophies and clinical specialties. The curricula include innovations in contemporary music, music technology, and improvisation. In-class experiences complement an array of clinical music therapy practica in some of the most-respected healthcare centers and educational institutions in the greater Boston area.

Reporting to the Dean of the Professional Education Division, the Chair will serve as the academic and administrative leader of the Department. This is a 12-month administrative position with a renewable contract.

The Chair will be a credentialed music therapist and leader with a demonstrated record of administrative experience in higher education. S/he will have clinical experience, evidence of research/creative scholarship, strong leadership qualities, and managerial and organizational skills. S/he will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of constituencies on- and off-campus. The ideal candidate will be creative, compassionate, forward thinking, and possess a commitment to the education of music therapy students.


  • Represent the Music Therapy Department as an administrative leader on- and off-campus
  • Advance the student experience and the work of the Department, the Division, and the College

  • Oversee curriculum
development, review, and management
  • Oversee faculty and staff including development, mentoring, and evaluation 

  • Manage Department budget and maintain accurate records

  • Identify and address Departmental goals

  • Serve on Department, Division, and College committees

  • Assist with student advising

  • Facilitate Department-sponsored guest artists and events
  • Teach a minimum of one course per fall/spring semester

  • Maintain professional engagement
  • Other duties as assigned


  • A record of administrative experience in higher education (preferably including experience with faculty/staff recruitment and evaluation; curriculum development; budget planning and oversight; student advising; and event planning)

  • College or university teaching experience
  • Record of research/creative scholarship/professional activity (demonstrating academic excellence and professional service)

  • Strong command of technology to support administrative tasks
  • Board Certified Music Therapist with a doctoral degree


The start date for the position is August 2016.
