University College Academic Advisor: SIU Carbondale University College is seeking applicants for a University College Academic Advisor position. The successful candidate will work as part of a team of advisors who provide academic advising primarily for first- and second-year students. The population advised includes a significant number of students who are undecided about their majors as well as students who are planning to apply to one of SIU Carbondale's selective programs. University College Academic Advisors provide individual advising, conduct and participate in workshops and other advising-related programs, and assist with outreach to prospective students, continuing students, faculty, and staff. This is a full-time, 12-month position with reappointment contingent on job performance and available funding.
Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include data management and program assessment, as well as organization of and participation in recruitment and retention activities. Responsibilities include holistic, developmental and strength-based academic advisement involving individual student contacts in order to provide expert guidance in the requirements leading to the baccalaureate degree, and help plan individualized academic programs for each student which impacts their choice of degree program and future career options/opportunities. Advisors will provide students with current and accurate information about the University Core Curriculum requirements, the requirements of all majors and degrees, and SIU Carbondale academic policies and procedures. Advisors must maintain close working relations with all academic units as well as university offices and support services. Advisors will promote a common purpose consistent with stated SIU Carbondale's goals and demonstrate a commitment to students and the learning environment. In addition, advisors will apply effective techniques to create working relationships with others to achieve common goals and successfully communicate and collaborate with others to achieve goals.
Effective Date: Position begins January 1, 2016.
Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree in the fields of Education, Educational Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling, Teacher Education, or other closely related field; two (2) years academic advising and counseling at the college level or very closely related activity; strong computing skills including thorough familiarity with MS Word, Excel, database programs, i.e. Banner, CRM tools, etc., Internet and email usage; excellent written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with data management; Experience with program assessment; Excellent listening and interviewing skills; experience working collaboratively with diverse university offices and personnel; demonstrated awareness and understanding of students from underrepresented groups; commitment to diversity; demonstrated ability to respond to supervision, guidance and direction in a positive, receptive manner. Experience providing quality customer service by creating a welcoming and supportive environment; demonstrated professionalism; demonstrated skills necessary to look at situations and processes critically to make recommendations for improvement.
