Synopsis of Role: 

The Course Builder builds courses in a learning management system (LMS) or other content management system. This role pays close attention to detail and keeps up with changing technology and requirements. The incumbent works primarily with the learning architects to gather content and build the courses in whatever format is required. In addition, the course builder works with the proper support team to replicate the model site and perform all quality checks prior to publishing. In this role, strong interpersonal skills are required.

Essential Functions:

  • Works with classroom support to commission model sites to be used for curriculum delivery.
  • Builds the model site containing the features and functionality as required for that course/program.
  • Gathers curricular content from the learning architect for inclusion into the LMS/content management system (CMS).
  • Organizes content for integration into LMS/CMS.
  • Inserts content and sets-up grade book items into the model site based on course requirements.
  • Works with the learning architect to ensure that content is built to specifications for the course.
  • Ensures that all special features and add-on technology are included and working properly.
  • Tests the functionality of all multimedia, labs, and other interactive resources within the LMS/CMS.
  • Reviews the syllabus and learning objectives and maps the content to the assignments and assessments.
  • Works with the learning architect to resolve any issues with content.
  • Works with the learning architect to prepare the system for quality assurance (QA) testing.
  • Resolves all defects as determined by the QA testing.
  • Prepares the final site for production and user acceptance testing (UAT).
  • Resolves any defects as determined by UAT.
  • Works with classroom support to prepare the site for duplication.
  • Reviews the site for any discrepancies after the site is duplicated.
  • Alerts the learning engineer and program director that the site is ready for release.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience

  • 2-3 years of experience building courses in an LMS or CMS.
  • Some knowledge of distance education course delivery in higher education preferred.
  • Experience working with Sakai preferred.
