Detailed Job Description

Title: Education Coordinator (International Student Advisor)

Rank: Administrative/Professional

Start Date: As soon as possible, term position, renewable contingent on performance and programmatic need.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Completed baccalaureate degree at time of application;
  2. 3-4 years of experience working with international students;
  3. Familiarity with visa rules and regulations;
  4. Willingness to serve as a Campus Designated School Official (DSO).

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Completed master's degree or post-Bachelors study;
  2. Experience as a Campus DSO;
  3. Fluency in English and another language;
  4. International experience living or studying in a foreign country.

Duties: CESL seeks an individual who will serve as an advisor to counsel its international student population on all aspects of functioning successfully in a foreign country in an academic setting. The advisor will:

  1. assist students with academic, immigration, intercultural, and personal issues;
  2. assist students with the application and admissions process for degree programs at SIU Carbondale;
  3. ensure CESL's compliance with SEVIS and Department of Homeland Security guidelines;
  4. organize, schedule and conduct new student orientation sessions;
  5. serve as the liaison with sponsoring agencies for scholarship students;
  6. provide one-on-one counseling to CESL students;
  7. develop collaborative and integrative relationships between CESL and international offices on campus and in the region;
  8. coordinate Conversation Partner program;
  9. prepare enrollment certification letters, academic progress reports, and letters of recommendation;
  10. ensure CESL's compliance with FERPA guidelines;
  11. coordinate university class days for CESL students;
  12. conduct departure interviews with CESL students;
  13. serve on CESL's Student Services Advisory Committee and others;
  14. serve as CESL liaison with other university officials;
  15. serve as the liaison between CESL students and SIU Carbondale students;
  16. support the overall mission of CESL and SIU Carbondale.
