Detailed Job Description

Dean, School of Public Health
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Drexel University (Drexel) invites experienced and innovative academic public health leaders to apply for the position of Dean of the School of Public Health (SPH). The Dean is the educational leader and chief administrator for this diverse, urban, community focused school of public health that has a unique commitment to experiential learning. Established in 1996, the SPH is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and is one of 12 schools and colleges at Drexel University. The Dean of the School of Public Health serves on the University’s Executive Council and should be a visionary and collaborative leader.

The search comes amid the continued, rapid upward trajectory of the SPH. Dr. Marla Gold is stepping down after a highly successful, decade long tenure of assembling a diverse, talented, and committed faculty whose work has placed the school among the strongest in the country; it is currently tied for 21st in the U.S. News & World Report rankings of schools of public health. The new Dean will provide the vision and strategic leadership necessary to elevate the School to new heights. Central challenges will be to enhance the quality of education and research programs at one of the fastest growing Schools of Public Health; build effective partnerships across professional disciplines, within SPH, throughout the University, and in the broader community; engage students, faculty, alumni, University administration, external funding agencies, accrediting bodies, philanthropic sources, and other stakeholders in order to implement innovative action for achieving the mission and vision of the School; raise funds to support the continued growth of the School; and demonstrate excellence in facilitating academic public health practice and service.

Qualified candidates for the position must possess a distinguished record of achievement and scholarship in a field related to public health and must be eligible for appointment as a tenured full professor in one of the SPH departments. The successful candidate will have proven administrative and leadership experience, and decision making ability including evidence of highly effective strategic management, planning, and thinking; a commitment to successful fundraising and philanthropy; outstanding interpersonal skills including a demonstrated commitment to collegiality and collaboration; and the inclination to synthesize the work of the SPH with that of Drexel’s 11 other units; a demonstrated high standard of professional integrity, a strong sense of professional ethics; and a clear commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students.

Drexel is a highly regarded private research university ranked 83rd by U.S. News & World Report that has deep ties to its community and is distinctive in its focus on experiential education. An academically comprehensive and globally engaged urban research university, Drexel is dedicated to advancing knowledge and society and to providing every student with a valuable, rigorous, experiential, technology-infused education, enriched by the nation’s premier co-operative education program.
