The Director of the University Press directs and manages all aspects of the operations of The University of Alabama Press, the state's oldest and largest publisher of scholarly books and journals and regional trade titles.

Additional Department Summary:

Founded in 1945, The University of Alabama Press is the only professionally staffed scholarly press in the state, publishing 80–85 new titles per year. As the scholarly publishing arm of The University of Alabama, the Press serves as an agent in the advancement of learning and the dissemination of scholarship by applying the highest standards to all phases of publishing, including acquisitions, editorial, production, and marketing. An editorial board comprised of representatives from all doctoral-degree-granting public universities within Alabama oversees the publishing program, and projects are selected that support, extend, and preserve academic research as well as foster an understanding of the history and culture of the state and region. The Press publishes in a variety of formats, both print and electronic, and uses short-run technologies to ensure that works are made widely available. The Director supervises a publishing team of 16.5 staff members.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years of related experience; OR Master's degree and a minimum of 8 years of related experience. Five years of experience in scholarly publishing.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications:

Demonstrated leadership capability in the field of scholarly publishing. A minimum of 5 years administrative, supervisory, and program management experience, including strategic and financial planning, budgeting, and analysis of departmental program effectiveness; extensive, in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the publishing industry; familiarity with current research trends in academic and electronic publishing technologies and digital information delivery systems. A valid U.S. driver's license is required. Must be at least 21 years of age and have an acceptable motor vehicle report as determined by the insurance carrier.

Skills and Knowledge:

Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to manage and motivate a team of publishing professionals, and to establish and maintain productive working relationships with the university's administration, press editorial board members, authors, scholars, reviewers, and colleagues. Working knowledge of personal computers and standard software applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree. Experience in fund raising. 62 Monthly (exempt): - Minimum - $ 70907.16 Midpoint - $ 102814.44
