The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for the cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects for Berklee College of Music. Relying on standard advancement best practices, this person will strengthen relationships between prospective donors and the college, educating and informing prospective donors about Berklee’s programs and needs, thereby increasing the prospective donors’ affinity to the college. This individual will be responsible for soliciting major gifts of $50,000 and above to support the mission and needs of the college. The Major Gifts Officer will also participate in donor prospect strategy sessions with other development staff and maintain effective relations with donors, prospects, board members, volunteers, and the community-at-large.

This position reports to the Senior Director, Major Gifts & Campaign Planning with a dotted line to the Global Development Officer, and works effectively with the Assistant Vice President, Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement, President and the college leadership. The position has no supervisory responsibilities—active fundraising is the focus of the position.

Under the supervision of the Senior Director, Major Gifts & Campaign Planning and Global Development Officer, the Major Gifts Officer:

  • Manages a portfolio of 150 prospects annually with a focus on an “Inner Circle” target group with expectations of soliciting all in this group within a current fiscal year.
  • Identifies, evaluates, cultivates, and solicits gifts of $50,000 or more as part of the Berklee’s overall fundraising program;
  • Participates as a member of the Development Management Team in decision-making, strategic planning and goal setting for the Development department.
  • Educates major gift prospects, writes proposals, establishes/manages key relationships between donors and college leaders, effectively develops and articulates the college’s case for support, and solicitation of gifts that result in the successful achievement of the college’s major gift goals;
  • Builds collaborative relationships within the institutional advancement team and within the college staff (faculty, college leadership, academic departments, community relations) to plan and implement a comprehensive fundraising program for Berklee;
  • Ensures that active and effective strategies are in place for all assigned prospects.
  • Coordinates with the Annual Fund Director and Research team to identify and cultivate prospects.
  • Provides functional supervision of shared support staff.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement major gift strategic planning, and solicitation strategies in support of strategic initiatives.
  • Professional understanding of major gift fundraising issues including moves management practices, cultivation techniques, and database record keeping policies.
  • Strong written and verbal presentation skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Some familiarity with contemporary music, leading musical figures, and music technology.
  • Fluent in Spanish, familiarity with Latin American culture and experienced global traveler.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from college or university (advanced degree preferred)
  • Four+ years experience working in a similar position for a complex not-for-profit institution with documented success in raising gifts of $10,000 or more;
  • Experience with Colleague or similar fundraising software;
  • Capital campaign experience.
  • Planned giving specialist, or equivalent.
