The Graduate Intern for Academic Advising is a part time, temporary position for a candidate in a graduate degree program in Higher Education Administration, College Student Development, or another related field.

Academic Year: 2015-2016

The Graduate Intern for Academic Advising is a part time position dedicated to providing guidance to creative undergraduate students in academic planning and accomplishing goals toward graduation. The Graduate Intern will work closely with professional staff to review the academic progress of students and teach them how to use online advising tools together with college services and resources, to empower students to be successful and stay on track academically. Special projects will include assisting in the development of programming interventions for academically at-risk students. The Graduate Intern will also assist in the development of social media and web communication outreach initiatives to meet students at their level, across the college.

Principal Duty and Responsibility

The Graduate Intern will receive training and participate in the following activities:

  • Drop-in sessions for student advising in schedule planning, course selection and registration information
  • Assistance in Academic Advising Orientation events, and the strategic planning of the first semester student experience
  • Collaborate the facilitation of Second Semester Success program initiatives for academically at-risk students
  • Assist in composing strategic messaging through, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media outlets
  • Participate in workshops, Peer and Faculty Advising trainings, as well as committee and staff meetings across the college as needed

Time Commitment

This is a 9-10 month position. The hours are flexible, but must be able to work at least three days per week, during afternoon student drop-in hours, totaling around 20 hours per week. Must also be able to attend three consecutive days of training, August 19, 20 and 21, 2015. Applications will be accepted until position is filled.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and enrollment in a graduate degree program in Higher Education Administration, College Student Development and Counseling, or another related field
  • Strong professional interest in the field of academic advising or counseling students
