Detailed Job Description

The Wellness and BASICS Specialist reports to the Coordinator of Community Responsibility Education. This position may require some evening and weekend availability and may require an adjusted weekday schedule.This is a part-time, grant funded position.

The Wellness and BASICS Specialist is primarily responsible for providing psycho-education and brief interventions for students struggling with negative consequences of alcohol and/or other drug use/abuse (75% of time). The program is rooted in the BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) model, which utilizes harm reduction and motivational interviewing to assist students in making changes. The Wellness and BASICS Specialist also assists with other wellness programming. This position is funded by a grant called the Reach Out Initiative; the mission of the initiative is to provide education and outreach on substance abuse, sexual and interpersonal violence, and mental health.

The Wellness and BASICS Specialist is responsible for:

  • Providing BASICS assessments and intervention services for mandated students
  • Facilitating alcohol and other drug psych-educational groups to mandated students
  • Delivering alcohol and other drug prevention and outreach presentations and workshops to student groups
  • Collaborating with Housing & Residence Life to provide alcohol and other drug programming in the residence halls, and to provide specific programming for the health and wellness living learning floor.
  • Helping update and develop AOD and other wellness marketing and promotional educational materials.
  • Assisting with training the Student Health Educators.
  • Serving on the Reach Out Initiative committee
  • Collaborating with staff members from personal counseling, wellness, and other members of the Reach Out committee and Berklee community on programming related to mental health awareness, substance use and abuse education, and sexual violence prevention
  • other duties as assigned

Required Experience

  • Master’s degree (earned or in progress) in social work, counseling psychology, public health, higher education or other related field
  • A working knowledge of harm-reduction, motivational interviewing, and alcohol/other drug education is necessary.
  • Previous college wellness experience needed.

Preferred Experience:

  • Two to three years of experience in counseling or similar field is preferred.
  • Preferred experienced with BASICS or brief interventions with young adult populations.
  • Group experience preferred.
