Berklee College of Music invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Composition Department. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Berklee is the world's largest independent music college and the premier institution for the study of contemporary music. The Berklee community consists of 4,500 talented and diverse students, 630 internationally respected faculty, over 500 dedicated staff, and an extended family of alumni, whose numerous Grammy awards testify to their contributions to the music of our time.

Reporting to the Dean of the Professional Writing and Music Technology Division, the Chair is a dynamic and innovative leader who is responsible for all of the academic, budgetary, and administrative aspects of the department. The Composition Chair leads a faculty of 40 teachers who provide Core Music instruction in traditional tonal music theory and composition as well as conducting.

In addition, the department provides instruction in the Composition concentrate to students who have declared the Composition major. The student majoring in Composition studies historic and contemporary writing, orchestration, counterpoint, music history, keyboard, and music technology as it relates to the composer. The student also learns about the role of the professional composer in today's music industry, developing the skills and knowledge to function effectively as a composer under a wide variety of conditions and music industry environments.

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum review, development, and oversight
  • Faculty management, including classroom observations, faculty development, mentoring, consultation, and evaluation;
  • Development of departmental goals and reports
  • Organization of department concerts and other department activities
  • Administration of departmental credit-by-exam tests
  • Membership on departmental, divisional, and college committees as needed
  • Maintenance of a teaching load of one or two sections of department courses during the fall and spring semesters
  • Advising Composition majors
  • Professional music participation outside of the college 


Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent professional experience 
  • Highly-developed composition skills and technology skills with familiarity of current music software
  • Experience in music curriculum development
  • Interest in working in a diverse workplace with a multicultural student body
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, including the ability to establish and maintain relationships with music industry constituencies, music organizations, and other academic institutions
