Reporting to the director of the Center for Writing across the Curriculum (CWAC) the Writing Development Specialist will work under the supervision of the CWAC director, in coordination with the directors of Composition and Seminar. This position involves a combination of instruction and faculty-development activities aimed at aligning pedagogy across the college’s new Core Curriculum. The Writing Development Specialist will help faculty teach writing in ways that help students transfer their learning among courses in English Composition, writing in the disciplines (WID), and the Collegiate Seminars, which is a great-books-style program that stretches across all four years.
This is a new adjunct faculty position for Composition, Seminar, and the Center for Writing across the Curriculum (CWAC).
Instruction: 3-4 courses annually
Required qualifications: Master’s in rhetoric and composition or related field; record of success with faculty development; record of success within a collaborative environment; excellence in teaching writing and an understanding of liberal-arts pedagogy
Preferred qualifications: PhD in rhetoric and composition or related field; expertise in writing across the curriculum; experience teaching dialogic, discussion-based courses; experience teaching within a liberal-arts context. Experience teaching at Saint Mary’s College, particularly for Composition and Seminar helpful.
Background on the Core Curriculum
Collegiate Seminar has adopted new developmental learning objectives across its four-course sequence. A major new assessment and alignment project involves Seminar, Composition, CWAC, the Office of Educational Effectiveness, and the Core Curriculum Committee; this is shaping a new relationship between English 4 and Collegiate Seminar. The goals are to align instruction, student learning expectations, and assessment of student learning related to the new, shared learning outcomes. Faculty development will help ensure the success of the alignment of these programs, both initially and for the future.
Similar faculty development activities are needed to align English 5—argument and research writing—and the new WID requirements. Particular programs, such as the Liberal Education for Arts Professionals, the Bachelor of Arts in Leadership and Organizational Studies, and the Integral Program, need individualized help aligning their programs with the Core goals.
