Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Chief Equity Officer, the Associate Dean, Residential and Campus Life develops, implements, and leads a comprehensive student engagement and leadership development strategy that aligns with the College’s mission to nurture the growth of the world’s most inspired musicians so they may fully realize their artistic, creative, and career potential. Specifically, the Associate Dean oversees a comprehensive portfolio of student activities, residential, and co-curricular programming; Student Activities Center; Orientation; leadership development programs; residential life; parent engagement; and other formal student development programs that advance learning outside the classroom and enrich campus and community life. The Associate Dean fosters productive partnerships with other campus departments that result in an integrated co-curricular strategy and programming model across the student experience. The Associate Dean, Residential and Campus Life may assume additional leadership opportunities within the division of Student Affairs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and vision for the development, delivery, and assessment of a comprehensive student engagement and leadership development strategy that includes key outcome measures for the quality of student life and learning beyond the classroom.
  • Using a broad-based knowledge, education, and expertise in student development theory, student activities, experiential education, and leadership development, guide and oversee campus-wide and constituency-based programming that incorporates best practices for student involvement, deep learning, and meaningful engagement.
  • Serve as a champion and advocate for undergraduate and graduate student issues, ideas, and concerns; provide regular opportunities and forums for students to provide feedback and participate proactively in decision-making; advise and counsel students on personal, academic, and community matters.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of engagement and communication with the parent and family community to provide clear understanding of the Student Affairs mission and student success and opportunities for student engagement outside the classroom. Develop the Parent Program strategy, which include electronic communication through web and blog development, as well as lead the development of a parent college during new and transfer student orientation.
  • In partnership with the AVP Student Affairs and Chief Equity Officer, develop and maintain critical partnerships with faculty and key campus leaders in academic affairs to ensure intentionality in the design of learning experiences and environment outside of the classroom.
  • Ensure close coordination in planning and implementation of key co-curricular programs with partners in Enrollment Management, Academic and Peer Advising, Residence Life and Housing, Career Development Center, Special Events, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Direct all operational and budgetary functions of the Campus and Community Life portfolio within the Division of Student Affairs; create and manage a transparent process to evaluate and provide funding for individual student requests to participate in various off-campus co-curricular/experiential learning opportunities.
  • Provide leadership, management guidance, and professional development to all staff (full-time, part-time, and student) within the Campus and Community Life Portfolio.
  • Provide support for the design, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive, outcomes-driven Residence Education program; work closely with student affairs administration staff to ensure effective coordination with related housing operations.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Housing and Residential Life, develop a comprehensive, strategic, and predictive model for housing occupancy.
  • Initiate and Chair, the Strategic Co-Curricular Programming Committee.
  • Serve as an Administrative Hearing Officer for Community Standards;
  • Serve as senior member of the crisis response team, specifically the senior response team; serve on call a minimum of 8 weeks an academic year and respond at any time if called to assist in any campus crisis response; coordinate, respond, and/or assist with student and campus emergencies/crises; conduct necessary follow-up with Public Safety, local agencies, and/or parents and staff as needed; assist with coordination, communication and implementation of emergency response plans and actions. 
  • Serve on various campus standing committees and working groups; assume additional responsibilities as required.

Working Conditions:

  • Serve as senior member of the crisis response team, specifically the senior response team; serve on call a minimum of 8 weeks an academic year and respond at any time if called to assist in any campus crisis response; coordinate, respond, and/or assist with student and campus emergencies/crises; conduct necessary follow-up with Public Safety, local agencies, and/or parents and staff as needed; assist with coordination, communication and implementation of emergency response plans and actions. 
  • Regular evening/weekend work required

  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents; special emphasis in the following areas: Public Safety, Facilities, Academic Services, Budgets and Accounts Payable, Event Management Office and Alumni and Friends Network.
  • Flexibility and willingness to assume new tasks and special projects.
  • Strong technology skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet-based software systems.

Required Experience

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs administration, college student personnel/counseling or equivalent required. Doctorate preferred.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of related experience in student affairs with an emphasis on student and leadership development, student activities and programming, or experiential learning.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, program development, management and leadership education, learning outcomes assessment, staff training/development, and student advisement.
  • Proven experience in student crisis management and emergency response.
