Overview

St. Edward's University is searching for a dynamic visionary for a full-time, nine-month, tenured or tenure-track position in Game Studies to begin in Fall 2016. Salary is commensurate with experience. We have 56 majors in our existing Game Studies program; our goal is to double the number of majors, for this major to be one of the top 10 majors at St. Edward's University, and to be nationally recognized for excellence. As Associate or Full Professor and Area Coordinator of the undergraduate Game Studies (BA) program, successful candidates will work on curriculum development, linking our programs to the gaming industry in Austin, and cultivating a vision and marketing strategy for program growth. Austin, with its growing tech industry and creative energy, is the perfect backdrop for an innovative and multidisciplinary Game Studies program. We are looking for leadership and vision when it comes to the development of this program, which emphasizes a collaborative, creative, and critical approach to the design and development of games. Commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to a Game Studies program, working with colleagues from disciplines including visual studies, computer science, business and entrepreneurship, creative writing and literature is essential.

Responsibilities

• The teaching load at St. Edward's is ordinarily 4/4; however, for the first three years, the new area coordinator will receive 1 teaching reassignment each semester. These reassignments will be reevaluated after the initial three-year period. In addition, the faculty member will receive 1 teaching reassignment in the first year for creative work and/or scholarship with the expectation that the person will apply for additional teaching reassignments. For the first, year, then, the teaching load will be 3/2 with the expectation that the successful applicant's scholarly and creative agenda would warrant the continuation of 3/2 load for additional years.

• Provide collaborative leadership for the program, including but not limited to curriculum development, assessment efforts, course scheduling, faculty coordination, and lab oversight.

• Serve as an academic advisor and mentor to students.

• Participate in department, school, and university committees and activities.

• Interact with the local game community to develop professional and service opportunities for students.

• Work with Admissions to create recruitment and marketing strategy.

• Create and maintain a program website.

• Work with St. Edward's partners (staff, faculty and offices) to apply for additional resources.

• Model professional development and creative scholarship in area of specialization.

• Fulfill other required faculty responsibilities as outlined in the Faculty Manual.

Qualifications

• Terminal degree in Game Design or Development or related field.

• Strong teaching record at the undergraduate level for a minimum of 5 years (full-time teaching or equivalent experience).

• Curriculum development experience required, and administrative experience preferred.

• Demonstrated record of creative and/or professional achievement in games research.

• A record that would warrant appointment in a leadership position at the associate or full professor level.

• Industry experience preferred.

• Evidence of proficiency in multiple aspects of game design/development with a specialization in one area.

• Ability to incorporate game theory and practical application into classes.

• Pedagogy consistent with a liberal arts emphasis of the lifelong learner, and a commitment to social responsibility, diversity, and the St. Edward's Mission Statement.

• Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and interdisciplinary team skills required.

• Success with obtaining external funding preferred.

• Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check required.
