Reports to: Senior Director of Development
Term: 1.0 FTE position, annual renewal, based on performance, funding, and need.
Rank: Officer of Administration
Salary Range: Minimum of $55,000 (based on 1.0 FTE). To be determined based on experience and qualifications.

The University of Oregon School of Law seeks an Assistant (or Associate) Director of Development and External Relations. The Associate (or Associate) Director takes an active role in all aspects of the Law School’s development program, including fundraising, donor relations/ stewardship, alumni relations and outreach, special events planning and implementation, and program administration. The Law School development program is funded jointly by the School and by University Development.
The Assistant (or Associate) Director will represent the school internally and externally, and contribute to the planning and implementation of the school’s development program. The position is field-oriented, requiring frequent travel and direct contact with donors and prospects, as well as collaboration with staff and faculty across the university. The Assistant (or Associate) Director will be responsible for meeting fundraising goals as they relate to the strategic needs of the Law School. Performance as measured against these goals will be evaluated annually. The position involves travel, both in and out of state.
The three major areas of responsibility are fundraising, alumni relations and stewardship, and planning and management.
The Assistant (or Associate) Director position will be a 12-month per year officer of administration. There is an expectation that this position will be renewed annually contingent on performance, funding and need.
a. Collaborate with development staff, faculty, program directors, other university administrators, and volunteers to identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors.
b. Plan and implement cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for special and annual gift prospects, as well as identify and qualify new prospective donors through regular and strategic contacts.
c. Serve as primary liaison with the UO Annual Giving program (AGP), working closely with the annual giving staff to increase numbers of annual donors and dollars, and ensure up-to-date training materials for callers. Prepare and manage Law School-specific direct mail appeals, and follow-up requests from Annual Giving program contacts with alumni.
d. Serve as primary liaison with the UO Foundation Relations, working closely with the staff to increase numbers of grant applications and dollars secured. Prepare and manage Law School-specific grant applications.
e. Serve as primary liaison on fundraising efforts of student groups and special projects within the Law School
f. Manage and coordinate all donation appeals made through special events, reunions, class giving, etc.
g. Prepare proposals for solicitation of individuals, corporations and private foundations. Coordinate clearance procedures as needed with other development officers, UO Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations and UO Research and Sponsored Programs.
h. Attend meetings of UO Development Office, provide information as requested to Foundation staff, and represent the school’s development office as needed.
40% Alumni Relations and Stewardship:
a. Coordinate all alumni relations, cultivation and stewardship strategies with the Sr. Development Director.
b. Manage all stewardship activities within the Law School, managing all donor accounts, and supervising relevant policies, procedures and personnel. Coordinate the recognition of new and existing endowment-level donors and major gifts to key programs with Sr. Development Director and Dean.
c. Responsible for planning and implementing all alumni and/or development-related special events. Current events include Law School Reunion Weekend, The Jaqua Distinguished Alumnus Award, The Frohnmayer Award for Public Service, Law School Alumni Association (LSAA) Board meetings and events, etc.
d. Manage and support of the LSAA Board meetings, special events and outreach opportunities.
e. Coordinate with Law School communications and development staff to submit appropriate alumni awards applications, both internally and externally.
f. Act as a liaison with the University of Oregon Alumni Association informing them of possibilities for collaboration.
40% Planning and Management:
a. Ensure appropriate level of supervision for the School of Law’s Development Project Coordinator. The Project Development Coordinator is responsible for implementing gift processing, stewardship, reporting, database management, special events budgeting and logistics, and all administrative duties such as calendar coordination and department mailings
b. Other duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s degree
• Two years of professional experience in development or fundraising OR three years experience in closely related fields such as sales, marketing and/or public relations with at least one year fund-raising experience either as a volunteer or in a professional capacity.
• Ability to travel to sites not regularly served by public transportation, by personal or state vehicle or other means and will have the ability to travel regionally throughout the areas of the west.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty, administrators, staff, members of the bench and bar, and legal employers from a wide range of backgrounds
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and a strong sense of donor-driven customer service.
• Ability to make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospective donors to specific university needs.
• Proficiency in use of personal computers and routine software applications.
• JD or other advanced degree
• Experience in higher education and understanding of the nature of a professional school and research university.
• Experience in or working knowledge of Law Schools or related legal fields.
