The College of Community Health Sciences, along with its Department of Family Medicine at The University of Alabama (UA) seeks a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor of Nutrition and Registered Dietician in a non-tenure earning clinical track position. The College has a faculty of 45 primary care oriented medical educators, and the College’s faculty-driven community practice represents the largest multi-disciplinary group medical practice in West Alabama, providing high-quality, patient-centered care to all communities it serves, including faculty, staff, and students of the University. Qualifications
Education: The individual must have a minimum of a Master’s degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent and fulfilled each of the following criteria:

(a) Completed a didactic program in dietetics, or corresponding coursework, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE).

(b) Completed an ACEND accredited supervised practice program. Supervised practice programs are degree programs that provide supervised practice experiences which meet the eligibility requirements and accreditation standards of ACEND. Completion of a Coordinated Program in Dietetics or a Dietetic Internship fulfills the requirements of a supervised practice program.

Registration/Certification: All applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Currently licensed (active or temporary) as a Dietitian with the State of Alabama Board of Examiners for Dietetic/Nutrition Practice required.

The ideal candidate will have prior medical nutrition therapy counseling experience in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities will include performing nutrition assessments and reassessments, determining medical nutrition therapy goals and desired outcomes, developing and implementing nutrition care plans and nutrition interventions, and providing nutrition education and recording timely and appropriate documentation in the medical record. Develop Nutrition Services’ policies and procedures for patient care. Participate in quality improvement activities, and participate in medical team activities as assigned or as schedule allows. Supervise the training of medical residents and students, dietetic interns and other health care professionals. Educate clinic staff in importance of nutrition assessment and education. Support scholarly activities of fellow faculty members by serving as an interventionist and assisting in data collection and evaluation. Contribute to service initiatives of the University and surrounding communities.

The College’s outpatient facilities are housed in the 77,000-square-foot University Medical Center, located on the UA campus and with 65,000 annual patient visits and a 7,000 Northport campus. Inpatient training occurs at the nearby DCH Regional Medical Center, which serves a seven-county area in West Alabama. The College’s residency – The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency, Tuscaloosa – currently with 45 residents, is unopposed and has graduated .more than 400 physicians, half of whom now practice in rural and underserved areas in Alabama and the region. The College also operates four fellowships for family physicians in obstetrics, hospital medicine, sports medicine, and behavioral health and rural public psychiatry; serves as a regional campus for the University of Alabama School of Medicine for the training of a cohort of 70 third- and fourth-year medical students; has received national recognition for its rural programs; and houses UA’s Institute for Rural Health Research.
In addition to the professional requirements listed above, the successful applicant must also demonstrate a commitment to the College’s mission to train physicians to serve rural and underserved areas, an ability to work collaboratively, and a willingness to participate enthusiastically in the life of the College. Academic appointment and salary will be commensurate with experience.
