Detailed Job Description

The External Scholarship and Relations Counselor is responsible for working with both institutional and non-institutional offices, agencies, foundations and private donors on the awarding, processing and tracking of all externally funded scholarships and special programs. Fulfills data requests and provides various reports as required throughout the academic year for all scholarship programs for which they are responsible. This includes but is not limited to Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF). Oversees the management and reconciliation of external scholarship funds via the Banner Funds Management System. Periodic maintenance of various scholarship tracking systems and/or databases. Responsible for overseeing customer relations and communications for scholarship area of the Office of Financial Aid. Includes but is not limited to, supervising/training customer service oriented student employees and ensuring adequate scholarship phone and customer service coverage. Administers the MSU Denver Scholarship Application process, including application upload and coding. The position also provides assistance to students in completing applications, reviewing essays, obtaining reference letters and related items. Provides general and MSU Denver specific scholarship and Financial Aid counseling to current and prospective students and their families. Works in conjunction with MSU Denver SAS and DSF representatives to provide intervention counseling for current DSF scholarship recipients who are in danger of not meeting the criteria for scholarship renewal. Other duties include: Serves as liaison between MSU Denver Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and works with several on and off-campus departments, agencies, area high school and colleges. Delivers presentations and provides informational scholarship workshops at Open Houses, orientations and other recruitment sessions. Serves as the Office of Financial Aid liaison with outside private scholarship agencies. Serves on scholarship and/or retention committees as needed. Serves an essential educational function of the University as it works closely with the strategic enrollment management initiatives including recommending, establishing, and administering procedures and policies related to delivery of aid to students in order for students to achieve their college degrees.


30% – Provide Financial Aid and MSU Denver-specific scholarship counseling/customer service information to current and prospective students and their parents. Focus upon counseling students regarding the financial aid process and providing guidance for applying to foundation and private scholarships. If you are bilingual, you may be asked to help with counseling in that language.

30% – Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) Coordinator for reviewing, awarding and tracking DSF scholarship recipients. This includes providing general financial aid guidance to new and renewal DSF scholarship recipients in collaboration with MSU Denver SAS, Colorado Challenge Grant Counselors, and DSF colleagues.

20% – Work with external and institutional scholarship administrators in the awarding, processing and tracking of all external scholarships including, private, corporate and external foundations.

10%- Oversees the management, awarding and reconciliation of external scholarships funds via the Banner Funds Management System. This includes but is not limited to DSF, LAEF, etc.

5% – Administer MSU Denver Scholarship Application process including application upload and coding in Banner system. Coordinate customer service related efforts with Associate Director of FA for Customer Service.

5% – Serve on institutional scholarship and/or retention committees as needed. Develop and maintain strong working relationships as liaison between MSU Denver Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and several on and off- campus departments and agencies, including, but not limited to MSU Denver SAS, DSF, Colorado Challenge Grant Counselors, area high schools and external foundations and donors. Meet regularly with representatives from internal and external partners to ensure clarity of communications, information and processes. Promote multicultural and diversity initiatives for improved student retention.

The daily work schedule for this position will accommodate evening counseling hours.

Required Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree.
One year of financial aid experience.
Experience collaborating with others to create and implement a project, program or task.
The ability to work during the evening.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Scholarships.
Experience using Banner Financial Aid Software.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Detail oriented.
Ability to handle numerous complex and routine tasks simultaneously.
Demonstrated experience in successfully promoting multicultural and diversity initiatives for improved student retention.
Bilingual language(Spanish/English).
