The candidate will be a vital member of the Journalism and Technical Communication faculty and be required to follow all tenure-track faculty responsibilities described in the MSU Denver Handbook for Professional Personnel.

Duties/Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include the following activities:
1. Teach 12 credit hours per semester of undergraduate coursework
2. Advise students
3. Provide service to the department, college, university and community
4. Participate in scholarly activities appropriate to the discipline as described in the Department Evaluation Guidelines
5. Other duties as assigned: Faculty engage in other duties, including faculty on reassigned time to serve in roles such as Department Chairs or Directors, will be reviewed on those activities.

Teaching may include the following courses: Journalism Fundamentals, Introduction to Public Relations, Public Relations Strategic Planning, Multimedia Journalism, Photojournalism and Social Documentary.

In addition to teaching, the position will require a minimum of five office hours per week to include advising and consultation with students. Candidates will be expected to teach in the classroom as well as online, and must be able to use and apply current technologies in the classroom.

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations, or related field + 6 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in a relevant discipline;
• Experience in course development
• 10 or more years of successful professional experience that includes knowledge of convergent media, public relations issues and the use of social media applications and platforms.
• The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach courses that involve use of digital media, current social media applications and other relevant technology that relates to the convergent journalism and public relations field.
• The successful candidate must be capable of teaching the following courses: Journalism Fundamentals, Introduction to Public Relations, Public Relations Strategic Planning, Multimedia Journalism, Photojournalism and Social Documentary (for course descriptions refer to http://catalog.msudenver.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=19&poid=4169&returnto=951).
• Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in journalism in the form of awards for journalistic work, successful publishing of a book or books, or commendation for journalism teaching experience.
• Experience with non-traditional students, diverse urban groups and the ability to use appropriate educational technology are also highly desirable.
• In particular, we seek candidates who demonstrate the ability to teach from a perspective that includes U.S. ethnic minorities, other marginalized groups, and/or women.
