Under general supervision, oversees primary care and technical procedures involving research animals; ensures animal care duties are performed according to established departmental standard operation procedures, investigator protocols, and federal regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology and procedures, Ability to work with hazardous agents, high ethical and moral standards, excellent interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communications skills, ability to perform tasks to which specific procedures may apply, ability to don protective clothing and equipment, ability to work with multiple animal species.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent supplemented with two (2) years of work related experience. An Animal Health Technician (AHT) or Veterinarian Technician (VT) certification. American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (ALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATg) certificate preferred or obtained when eligible.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Perform weekly room rounds and report findings to management and lab animal technicians on a designated schedule.

Assists husbandry supervisor with scheduling and cross training records; coordinates and oversees projects; assists investigators in special husbandry needs of research animals.

Perform supervisory duties as directed by immediate supervisor or department administration.

Perform general husbandry duties in assigned rooms.

Assists and perform technical procedures as requested.

Other duties as assigned.

Performs other duties as assigned.
