Georgia Southern University’s Department of Manufacturing Engineering in the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Information Technology invites applications and nominations for three tenure-track positions of Assistant Professor in the areas of: (1) Additive Manufacturing; (2) Materials Science and Processing; (3) Safety and Quality Control; (4) Robotics, Assembly and Automation; and/or (5) Design for Manufacturing.

Georgia Southern University, classified as a doctoral/research institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is a member of the University System of Georgia. As the largest and most comprehensive research institution in southeast Georgia, the University is a residential campus of more than 20,500 students representing 48 states and 89 nations.

Both the teaching and the research activities of the faculty have a strong applied emphasis.  The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the mission of the department by: (1) developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate-level lecture and laboratory courses; (2) establishing a funded research program that partners with University colleagues, graduate students, undergraduate students, government agencies and/or regional industry; and (3) engaging in professional service.

Position Description. Reporting to the chair of the department, the position of assistant professor requires an ability to perform teaching, service and research responsibilities.  The faculty member must have a terminal degree in the field of Manufacturing Engineering or a closely related discipline. The faculty member in this position is required to: (1) develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses (lecture and laboratory); (2) supervise MS-level theses and undergraduate projects; (3) pursue scholarly activities (including funded research in the field, writing and managing grants, and preparing peer-reviewed publications); (4) engage in academic mentoring; (5) assist in program assessment and execution of the department’s continuous improvement plan; (6) participate in appropriate professional service; and (7) participate in professional activities and organizations. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., D.Eng. or equivalent degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline by August 1, 2016
  • A Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Effective English communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to develop and teach lectures and laboratories in courses such as but not limited to (1) Design for Manufacturability, Assembly and Sustainability, (2) Materials Science and Processing, (3) Additive Manufacturing, (4) Robotics and Automation Studio, Industrial Sensors and PLCs, Hydraulics, Pneumatics and /or Safety
  • Demonstrated potential to conduct funded research in the relevant field

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure
  • Previous teaching experience
  • Ability to develop and teach lectures and/or laboratory courses in the areas of Lean Manufacturing and any other course related to this position description
  • Record of scholarship
  • Demonstrated participation in professional service activities
  • Experience with ABET accreditation and/or continuous quality improvement activities
