Detailed Job Description

The NASAD accredited Art Department at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Communication Design BFA program beginning in August 2016. The Department offers courses that examine art and design in relationship to contemporary society with specific emphasis on emerging and interdisciplinary practices.
The BFA in Communication Design program positions the role of design as a responsive form of intervention operating in distinct socio-cultural landscapes. Students gain experience in three pedagogical tracks that lead to a broad but deep relationship to the field, fostering specialization at the senior level. Theory and practice are integrated throughout the curriculum in individual and team-based contexts. The program emphasizes community-driven design that merges best practices across art and design disciplines. Students in Communication Design respond to problems through a spectrum of outcomes that may be rooted in the tradition of contemporary practice emphasizing time-based, performative, cultural, object-based, built or visual experiments in communicative form.
Ideal candidates will possess strengths that are design-centered but supported by an interdisciplinary approach to pedagogy. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to teaching design practices that embrace emerging technologies: undergraduate courses focused on web/mobile design, responsive web design, user interaction and user experience design and development, and/or design and development of interactive social media applications.

Among the courses taught by the faculty hired will be undergraduate Communication Design courses focused on interaction design, web design, user experience design, and time-based applications as well as typography, branding, and systems design applications, especially as they pertain to digital environments.
The successful candidate must have the ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population.
