The Center for English as a Second Language at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking an experienced full-time director who will act as the chief academic, administrative, fiscal and personnel officer for the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL).

CESL is a self-supporting academic unit located within the Department of Linguistics and fully accredited by CEA and by UCIEP. Its 80+ faculty and staff teach upwards of 250 students from diverse backgrounds and nationalities. CESL's primary goal is to give academic language instruction to both conditionally admitted SIU Carbondale students and to students and professionals who desire to improve their English language skills. In addition, many MA TESOL students in the Department of Linguistics acquire hands-on teacher training through work in CESL.

Position Title: CESL Director

Rank: Administrative Professional, 12-month appointment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MA or higher degree in TESOL, or ESL related field (Curriculum and Instruction, 2nd language studies, Applied Linguistics, or related field)
  • Five or more years of ESL/EFL teaching experience in an American university
  • Three or more years of IEP experience
  • Minimum of three years of administrative experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic standards, curriculum development, and student services.
  • ESL/EFL teacher training/mentoring skills
  • Experience with budget management
  • Familiarity with recruiting strategies for international markets and experience with international recruiting and program proposal writing
  • Curriculum development experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in ESL related field (Curriculum and Instruction, 2nd language studies, TESOL, etc.)
  • Proficiency in a second language
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and foster professional relationships to ensure program stability
  • Demonstrated record of progressively higher administrative responsibility
  • Demonstrated professional involvement
  • Knowledge of international student mobility trends
  • Familiarity with US immigration policies related to F, J, and B visas
  • Experience living, studying, or working abroad
  • Experience building relationships with students, faculty, internal to a campus environment, and externally
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Leadership Duties:

  • Develops and implements a vision, mission and strategic planning for CESL in collaboration with college and university leadership.
  • Oversees facilities, marketing, accreditation and memberships, and staffing
  • Ensures fulfilling and maintaining accreditation

Program Promotion Duties:

  • Promotes CESL both on and off campus
  • Seeks and applies for new recruiting and programming opportunities for CESL
  • Prepares and disseminates proficiency statuses for undergraduate and graduate admissions
  • Prepares proposals and works with the Graduate School and departments to provide ITA support
  • Coordinates planning and implementation of special program proposals, including budget and staffing
  • Assists SIU Carbondale with international recruiting planning and implementation
  • Reviews markets and SIU Carbondale/CESL international marketing efforts

Program Management Duties:

  • Supervises and manages a staff of 80 faculty, staff, graduate students, and student workers
  • Supervises coordination and review of the CESL curriculum
  • Supervises the coordination of CESL student placement and evaluation
  • Supervises the recruitment and admission of new students
  • Prepares and reviews the CESL budgets
  • Evaluates faculty
  • Recommends new and continuing CESL faculty appointments
  • Selects, supervises and evaluates CESL administrative staff
  • Assigns teaching and coordination duties
  • Supervises teacher orientations, retreats, and training sessions within CESL
  • Facilitates CESL-based proposals, research and grant proposals
  • Schedules and facilitates regular meetings of CESL faculty and staff
  • Supervises coordination of sponsored programs within CESL
  • Oversees production and accuracy of CESL publications
  • Serves as marketing coordinator and recruiter for the program
  • Serves as liaison to external offices
  • Coordinates CESL placement and proficiency exams
  • Verifies payroll and fringe benefits records
  • Engages in professional development (e.g. research, professional service [UCIEP, CEA, EnglishUSA, NAFSA, TESOL], conference attendance or presentations, etc.)
