Detailed Job Description

Position: The School of Accountancy in the College of Business, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, invites applicants for the position of Director of the School of Accountancy, with tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, to begin employment July 1, 2016. The director is the chief administrative, academic and fiscal officer of the School of Accountancy and reports to the Dean of the College of Business. The director is responsible for managing the daily operations of the school and its programs, fostering a collegial and productive environment that fully engages all internal and external constituencies, and providing leadership that inspires the school's faculty and students to achieve greater academic excellence and innovation. The Director must be committed to the highest standards in education, diversity and equal opportunity.

About the School, College and University: The School of Accountancy and the College of Business hold dual accreditation by AACSB. The School of Accountancy offers both residential and online Bachelor of Science degrees in accounting, a residential Master of Accountancy, and a Ph.D. program. It is also responsible for providing support courses to the College of Business MBA and MS programs. The School serves approximately 370 undergraduate majors and minors and 65 graduate students in these programs. The School supports faculty with instructional and research concentrations in all areas of accounting.

The School is one of four departments within the SIU Carbondale College of Business, which also offers residential Bachelor of Science degrees in business economics, finance, management and marketing; an online Bachelor of Science degree in business administration; both residential and online MBAs; an online MS in Supply Chain Management and Engineering; and doctoral programs in all departments. It serves approximately 1,200 undergraduate and 250 graduate students.

  • Provide leadership for the department, its faculty, staff, students, alumni and programs
  • Lead the School of Accountancy's strategic planning, budgeting, personnel management (including recruitment, hiring, faculty development, and promotion and tenure review), and continuous improvement under AACSB accreditation standards
  • Work with the Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, other department chairs, staff, and administrators across campus to enhance and support academic programs and research
  • Advance the quality, productivity, enrollments and reputation of the School, College and University
  • Develop and sustain collegial and productive relationships with on- and off-campus constituencies including alumni, business professionals, and funding sources
  • Teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level in an area(s) to be determined by the candidate's interest and experience and the needs of the department
  • Remain research active per AACSB standards for a "scholarly academic," such as authoring peer-reviewed journal publications and/or other scholarly activity

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in accounting from an AACSB-accredited institution, or a terminal degree in a related field, with faculty experience in an accounting program within a College of Business
  • Academic record of teaching, research and service consistent with the expectations of a tenured Associate Professor or Professor at a Research University: High Research Activity
  • Successful teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at an AACSB-accredited institution
  • Demonstrated understanding of the AACSB accreditation process for both accounting and business
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two years of leadership experience in higher education program administration or departmental administration, or two years of experience in an executive-level business management position
  • An understanding of budgetary and academic affairs in higher education
  • Appropriate professional certifications (such as CPA, CMA, CIA)
  • Demonstrated skills in alumni relations, fundraising, and development

Salary/Rank: Salary for this fiscal year, 12-month appointment is competitive and commensurate with the individual's experience and the academic rank of the appointment.

Effective Date of Employment: July 1, 2016.
