Detailed Job Description

The purpose of this staff position is to develop, support, perform, and manage research in CASE. This position will require the performance of technical benchwork and behavioral studies as well as supporting the development and execution of research activities. Significant contributions are required for the development and execution of new and current projects, developing and writing grant proposals, and authoring publications.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

• Technical experience and working knowledge in numerous disciplines such as neuroscience (behavioral, pharmacological, physiological, anatomical, molecular, genetic, etc.), cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, anatomy, systems physiology, and animal science.
• General knowledge and technical proficiency in histology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, immunogold labeling for electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, light microscopy, biochemical assays, protein analysis, electrophysiology, gene transfection, transgenic mouse models, microinjections, animal survival surgeries, animal pain behavior, pharmacological assays, osmotic pump implantation, in vivo neural tracing, and cell and tissue culture.
• Ability to significantly contribute to the conceptual design and writing of grants as co-investigator/key personnel.
• Ability to significantly contribute as an author research publications.
• Ability to effectively communicate and work well on a research team with faculty, staff, students, trainees, and collaborators.
• Ability to support faculty and students in the planning and execution of research projects, grant applications, publications, abstracts, etc. This may include developing new lines of research with CASE faculty.
• Ability to train the technical staff, students, trainees, and faculty in laboratory procedures, provide general supervision in the laboratories, and assist with data management and analysis.
• Ability to manage and coordinate active laboratories and common facilities including day to day activities (purchasing, oversight of laboratory animals, biosafety, etc.). Previous laboratory management experience is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree with minimum 2 years experience.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Designs and performs research studies including technique optimization, assays (behavioral, pharmacological, biochemical, histological, molecular, etc.), data collection and analysis, etc.

Provides significant contributions to the conceptual development and writing of grant applications as co-investigator/key personnel, authoring articles and abstracts, performing literature reviews, etc.

Develops, optimizes, provides technical training and ongoing guidance to CASE research projects

Manages and coordinates active laboratories and common facilities including scheduling, checking inventory, arranging purchases, and evaluating and maintaining common equipment in the research lab areas for microscopes, centrifuges, hoods, ovens, various imaging systems, autoclave, freezers, refrigerators, and room temperature cabinets. Additionally, this position will ensure the laboratories are current with animal and environmental health inspections and will assist in writing IACUC and IRB protocols for ongoing and future studies.
