The Optician will provide a broad range of Optical Support at the UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry Clinic Network. The successful candidate will assist with selection of eyewear and adjustments to obtain appropriate fit, collect patient financial and demographic information as well as processing invoices and insurance claims, teaches interns optical department operations.
This is full-time position where duties and responsibilities will evolve as the clinical network expands. UIWRSO personnel will be subject to the leave and holiday policies of the School of Optometry and its clinical services, which may differ from those of UIW.
Coordinates all aspects of prescriptive eyewear orders, fitting, measurements, lens selections, etc. Place lab orders for frame/lens using appropriate vendors and ordering systems. Determine eligibility for insurance materials and guide the patient to make the appropriate selections. Verify the accuracy of all incoming eyewear orders to ensure quality within the guidelines of applicable “ANSI” standards. Dispensing of eyewear using proper optician protocols. Review lab orders and invoices for accuracy prior to submission for payment. Maintain the appearance/tidiness of the dispensary. Manage the inventory using the current protocols. Occasional use the edger to cut lenses for frames. Performs other duties as assigned.
Teach the interns all of the functions required to operate a successful optical dispensary.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Demonstrate organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle the pressure of strict deadlines. Maintains confidentiality and HIPPA compliance at all times. Professional image, results oriented, and focus towards customer service required. Performs routine maintenance and upkeep of optical equipment and knowledge of insurance procedures.
Required Work Experience
Minimum of two years of work experience as Optician in optical dispensing, preferably in a teaching institution or private practice.
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
American Board of Opticianry (ABO) must be obtained within 1 year to maintain employment.
Some evening hours are required. Saturday rotation. Work hours are subject to change based on the needs of the clinic and school for each semester.
