Detailed Job Description

Under general direction, provides spiritual care and guidance to patients, their families, and hospital staff.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

Knowledge in the area of theology and the social sciences
Listening skills
Ability to communicate on an individual level, and in group situations
Ability to perform duties with compassion, energy, openness, and flexibility
Ability to fulfill the needs of the ill and distressed with a high level of sensitivity and care
Ability to counsel and assist others by providing spiritual comfort and support
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Willingness to serve others on a continual basis without exception

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, with bachelors degree preferred; supplemented with one (1) year related experience. A minimum of one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) required from the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) program is required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Responds to referrals; evaluates patients’ needs for spiritual guidance; coordinates with health care team to assist patients with personal adjustments; meets with patients and families for spiritual or ethical discernment; responds to on-call emergencies.

Provides services which ensure and enhance the Catholic Jesuit Mission; provides prayer and sacraments to patients, their families, and staff, using an ecumenical approach; responds to requests and initiates prayer; calls the priest or denominational pastor to provide sacraments as needed.

Shares interdisciplinary care of total patient needs with hospital team; responds to spiritual needs of patient and staff; collaborates with hospital care team to identify and resolve problems; facilitates ethical discussions; completes medical chart documentation as required; serves as liaison between patients, families, and hospital staff during periods of crisis; responds to employees’ requests for spiritual discernment; interacts with staff during times of stress and particular need.

Maintains personal professional growth and development through in-services, workshops, and current literature; teaches how to provide spiritual care to the interdisciplinary team.

Performs other duties as assigned.
