The Department of Computer Science at the University of Alabama (UA) invites applications for two (2) faculty positions at Assistant/Associate, to begin August 2016. The area of focus is software engineering, with specific application to data analytics and computational modeling. Outstanding candidates from all areas of software engineering and computer science will be considered. At the time of appointment, candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field, with solid evidence of superior research and scholarly accomplishments, as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching. Candidates for these positions will be expected to form collaborations with the National Water Center (http://nws.noaa.gov/oh/nwc/), a new federal research facility located on the UA campus. A particular area of interest of the National Water Center, and for collaboration with UA, is interdisciplinary science and software engineering with a focus on hydro-informatics and data processing.
The University of Alabama is considered the Capstone of higher education in Alabama and is also the largest institution in the State, with an enrollment of roughly 37,000 students. UA is located on a beautiful 1,168 acre residential campus in Tuscaloosa, a dynamic community of over 150,000. The Tuscaloosa community provides rich cultural, educational, and athletic activities for a broad range of lifestyles. The University was ranked in 2014 by US News and World Report as 38th among US public universities. In 2012-2013, the University led the nation among public universities for National Merit Scholars. The Department of Computer Science benefits from the University’s rapid expansion in terms of facilities, including the recent construction of the $300 million Engineering and Science Quad. This four-building complex provides of 90,000 square feet of state-of-the-art research and instructional space. The CS department has twenty-four faculty members (15 tenured/tenure track faculty, seven of whom have interests in software engineering), over 600 undergraduates in an ABET accredited B.S. degree program, and 40 graduate students. The department also offers a Software Engineering Concentration for its undergraduates. The software engineering faculty in the Department are PIs or co-PIs on numerous active research awards across multiple funding agencies. The Department is also home to the Center for Advanced Public Safety (CAPS), which currently has over $10M in funding focused on technology to improve public safety, law enforcement, homeland security and traffic safety. CAPS is actively seeking to establish research collaborations with faculty members in all areas of computer science and software engineering research. While Tuscaloosa is famous for our football dynasty, there is much more that this great city has to offer. Settled along the Black Warrior River, Tuscaloosa is home to 150,000 residents and a thriving sense of community. The downtown area has been revitalized with great local restaurants, shops, and apartments. The riverfront area continues to grow with new recreational trails, businesses, and restaurants, along with the recent addition of the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater and the River Market. The Amphitheater hosts a variety of events from mainstream concerts to community events. The city is home to a great cultural arts community, boasting attractions such the famous Kentuck Art Center and the Druid City Arts Festival. Outdoor activities are easy to find, including riverfront walking trails and an array of local parks. In addition to all that Tuscaloosa offers, the city is located just under an hour from Birmingham. The Birmingham metro area has a population of approximately one million. It offers many employment opportunities ranging from medical, to banking to technology. Many UA faculty live in Birmingham and commute to Tuscaloosa. Also, in the vicinity of Tuscaloosa are the Mercedes Benz manufacturing plant as well as the NASA/DoD installation in Huntsville.
