In collaboration with the director, The Student Media Advertising Advisor is responsible for coaching, advising, training and mentoring approximately 50 student staff members of the Student Media Advertising, Marketing and Creative departments, and others as relevant, to meet daily, monthly and annual financial goals for multiple media formats and publications.
The Advertising Advisor facilitates and helps to manage out-of-the-classroom, hands-on learning and training opportunities for students that promote personal and professional development, while working to successfully fund the majority of operational expenses for the Office of Student Media, and develop new sustainable revenue streams.
The Advertising Advisor is responsible for providing ethical and industry perspective to undergraduate and graduate students who market and sell advertising space to a wide range of media formats, including daily print newspaper, annual magazine, yearbook, podcast, video, app, social media, online and events.
Other duties include providing technical and educational assistance, overseeing, organizing and providing training programming, managing budget and educating student staff on their budgets and quotas, developing and implementing programs and special events to support the strategic plan and goals of the department, maintaining positive and profitable client relationships, consulting with the director and student managers on setting rates and working with the director and student leaders to develop the annual rate card and marketing packages and efforts.
This position serves as an advocate for students and freedom of expression; must understand role of hyperlocal newspaper in a community and role of Student Media in facilitating campus-wide engagement.
This position is responsible for developing and implementing new sustainable revenue models.
Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or related field and two (2) years of professional level writing/editing experience which has included word processing computer applications and a demonstrated knowledge of graphic arts principles. A Master’s degree in a relevant field may be substituted for up to (1) one year of the required experience.
-3 or more years of recent professional experience in advertising and/or marketing.
-Experience advising/mentoring/counseling college students and/or coordinating student services programs.
-Experience which demonstrates knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition and other design, audio and video editing software.
-Experience which demonstrates knowledge and understanding of multiple formats within current journalism and media industry.
-Professional experience directly related to graphic design, video and audio editing, coding, social media, mobile, online engagement.
-Experience which demonstrates knowledge of strengths of advertising in all major media formats.
-Experience with focus groups.
-Experience which demonstrates knowledge and understanding of student development.
-Experience successfully launching new products and developing new revenue models.
-Experience with successful advertising and marketing campaigns.
