Detailed Job Description

The Director is responsible for the overall planning, development, implementation and supervision of all college initiatives for programs and courses offered in the Legal Studies Institute. Responsibilities include oversight of the design and scheduling of instructional programs and courses in legal studies and of the ongoing assessment of the learning outcomes of the programs and courses in the Director's assigned areas of responsibility. The Director will supervise all faculty teaching in the Institute, evaluate faculty and staff assigned to the Institute and complete the instructional schedule. The Director will collaborate closely with staff and faculty throughout the college, including those assigned to all units within the Divisions of Learning and other Divisions of the college.

A primary role of the Director is to work with and explore relationships with external partners, including bar associations and other legal and mediation organizations, as well as community stakeholders, to ensure Institute programs are effective and relevant and that students are provided with educational experiences outside the classroom through internships, events and activities. The Director is expected to be visible and active in the legal and mediation communities, including the local and state bar associations. The Director will assure that the college is proactively and effectively meeting the diverse needs and goals of students in legal studies programs and courses.

The Director is also responsible for performing activities related to special learning and administrative projects assigned by the Dean of the School of Business and Law. These projects may include school-wide projects and events, marketing, learning outcomes development and assessment, interdisciplinary programming, experiential learning and other initiatives undertaken by the School of Business and Law. The Director is also responsible for serving as an instructor in any credit, non-credit and/or contract business programs as assigned by the Dean. Normally, the Director will teach at least one course offered through the Legal Studies Institute each semester.  

Required Qualifications

Juris Doctor degree and a member in good standing of the Maryland Bar or other state bar.

Minimum of five years of college-level teaching experience.

Minimum of five years of legal practice.

Experience in managing within an academic setting or equivalent professional setting.

Demonstrated volunteer and/or leadership experience in local and state bar associations.

Experience in external program development requiring collaboration with state and local judicial, legal, and academic leaders.

Experience in collaborative management, team building and consensus building.

Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with students, instructors, administrators, professional and support staff, and community stakeholders.

Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Strong organizational, problem solving, and strategic thinking skills.  

Preferred Qualifications

40-Hour Mediation Training Certification or other mediation knowledge/experience.

Experience in developing college courses/programs and advising students.

Experience in managing an ABA-approved paralegal program.

Experience with marketing and fiscal management.

Demonstrated familiarity with alternative teaching methods and instructional technology.

Experience with student-centered learning and assessment of student success
