Detailed Job Description

Under the direction of the Dean and the Chair of either the Department of Criminal Justice or the Department of History and Political Science, the Director of National Security Studies (INSS) will develop and supervise all INSS programs, fund raising and provide management of all INSS activities. These duties include: 1) oversee for-credit and non-credit curriculum development and instruction for all University programs 2) effectively implement administrative decisions, state regulations and UVU policies and procedures; 3) serve as liaison with outside agencies, and UVU senior administration; 4) work to achieve University goals regarding community engagement and student success through the development and implementation of new programs including emerging best practices 5) develop and implement University goals including strategic plans, mission/vision and objectives; 6) coordinate and participate in development activities in cooperation with University Development office and within a two year period be responsible to meet funding expectations through grants and contracts. 7) act as the UVU resident expert and spokesperson for UVU INSS initiative to public, media, legislative representatives, and educational partners including public presentations at key national and international conferences, guest lectures for educational institutions, etc. 8) teaches up to six course per year and participates in a variety of learning environments and activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with terminal, earned degree appropriate to discipline. ABD accepted. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university. Preferred Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a PhD or JD required.
Must have at least five years of teaching experience in national security and related subjects and at least 5 years of professional experience working in national security.
Must exhibit a demonstrated ability to produce influential and high quality scholarship on national security-related topics.
Must have the leadership skills and experience required to create and develop a successful national security program at UVU, including the ability to raise funds and obtain critical support from public and private entities.


Knowledge of and experience in teaching courses in the area of National Security.

Knowledge and skills in current instructional theory, methods, strategies and techniques.

Knowledge in student management, motivation and evaluation techniques.


Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups and perform services as a university representative.


Ability to supervise and organize employee development programs and processes.

Ability to provide guidance and leadership to professional personnel in the area of expertise.

Ability to gather and analyze statistical data, generate reports, and successfully publish content as appropriate.

Ability to foster a cooperative work environment among all divisions.

Ability to develop, plan and implement short and long-range goals.

Ability to create and develop effective work teams with the skills and abilities necessary to accomplish University goals.

Pay Range

$105,000 - $115,000 DOQ
