Rowan University is a comprehensive state-designated research institution with approximately 15,000 students. Its main campus is located in Glassboro, N.J., 20-miles southeast of Philadelphia, and it has a branch campus and medical school in Camden and a second medical school in nearby Stratford. The College of Education as the oldest college at Rowan University has a long-held commitment to excellence in teaching, community engagement, and innovation in scholarship. It was recently recognized as having one of the best online graduate programs in the country and is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and approved by the New Jersey Department of Education.
The College of Education is searching for a qualified and experienced math or science content specialist with teaching experience and/or expertise in addressing content at elementary grade levels.
The appointment consists of but is not limited to teaching a broad range of elementary education courses that include school visits during associated field experiences as well as developing specialized math or science content matter programs emphasizing research in practice and social justice. The successful candidate will demonstrate a constructivist based theoretical framework centered on a philosophy that is a grounded in social justice. This is a full time tenure track joint appointment in the Departments of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Education and Inclusive and Integrated Education (IIE).
The Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics Education (STEAM) is a newly formed department at the College of Education with the focus on developing future educators that are competent in teaching interdisciplinary approaches grounded in research and practice. The department offers initial licensure programs: one at an undergraduate level with a dual major focus in art, music, health exercise science and education and one at a graduate level with a focus on Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science and Mathematics in secondary education.
The Department of Inclusive and Integrated Education (IIE) offers a variety of opportunities for caring and dedicated undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and graduate students to pursue initial certification as early childhood or elementary teachers as well as an endorsement as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities. In addition, the department offers graduate programs that provide advanced study in curriculum and teaching, including the M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership, the M.S.T. in Elementary Education and the M.A. in Special Education program. The M.A. in Learning Disabilities program is also offered for students interested in pursuing certification as a Learning Disabilities Specialist. The department is committed to fostering student growth as instructional leaders who have a developmental perspective, cooperative disposition, and reflective orientation and are committed to the principles of access, success, and equity for all students. All programs in the department are nationally accredited and have been approved by the New Jersey Department of Education.
• A terminal degree (PhD or EdD) in math or science education or related field
• A Bachelor or Master's degree in math or science content
• Meet minimum qualifications for licensure or equivalent to teach grades P-6 in New Jersey
• Experience teaching in P-12 settings.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering academic achievement, social and personal responsibility, and social justice through innovation in elementary math or science education
• Demonstrated experience working with underserved populations in inclusive settings
• Demonstrated commitment to furthering seamless inclusion of elementary math or science education into teaching and learning particularly in the P-6 environment
• Familiarity with current teacher accountability requirements and best practices in elementary math or science education
• A teaching/learning philosophy consistent with the mission of the College of Education
• Demonstrated active teaching, research and service agenda with an emphasis in social justice.
• Experience with outreach programs demonstrating social justice initiatives and/or development
• Experience with varied educational technologies in teaching of math or science at the elementary level
