Join the U.S. Naval War College (USNWC), one of the nation’s largest and most vibrant graduate teaching programs in the interdisciplinary field of national security studies. We invite applicants who are interested in working in the writing and communications skills support program (“The Writing Center”) of the nation’s oldest graduate institution of professional military education. We are a blended faculty of scholars and practitioners providing graduate professional education to a highly selective and motivated student body comprising more than 500 mid-career military and civilian national security professionals from the United States and more than fifty partner nations who represent senior leaders of tomorrow. The College also has a large and well-regarded distance education program serving thousands of students around the globe.
The Dean of Academic Affairs at the USNWC seeks to fill the Professor of Writing Skills position as early as January 2016. General responsibilities for the Professor of Writing Skills include: developing, delivering, and assessing writing skills workshops; tutoring individual students; developing print and digital products addressing all aspects of the writing process; working collaboratively with other elements in the College’s nascent “Learning Commons” construct; identifying and sharing emerging trends, best practices, and research results related to student success issues; and developing and overseeing assessment tools for writing and related skills. The Writing Center is also responsible for managing the College’s annual essay competitions and overseeing the functions of the student journal, Lucent (https://www.facebook.com/LuceNWC). The Writing Center reports to the Dean of Academic Affairs, coordinates with the core academic departments, and adapts programs to the College’s unique curricula.
Essential qualifications include: a relevant advanced degree (Ph.D., M.A. or M.F.A.); significant and sustained experience working directly with students as a writing skills support expert; and demonstrated ability in designing, implementing, and evaluating academic support programs. Desired qualifications include: a Ph.D. in a field directly relevant to advanced writing and communication skills; evidence of exemplary skill and experience in public speaking and teaching adult learners in a college or university setting; experience with enhancing student abilities in studying, oral/visual presentations, and related skill sets; and/or experience working within a “Learning Commons” environment.
Candidates must be capable of obtaining a Department of Defense security clearance at the SECRET level.

The U.S. Naval War College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) to award Master of Art degrees in National Security and Strategic Studies and Defense and Strategic Studies and by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to award certification in Joint Professional Military Education (Phases I & II). This appointment is governed by provisions of 10 USC 7478 as delegated by the Secretary of the Navy, and the regulations of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management which apply to “excepted service” appointments under Schedule A. For the successful candidate, the initial term of appointment is expected to be two years in length with provision for renewal dependent on level of performance. Salary is dependent on the level of experience and is governed by the Secretary of the Navy’s Naval Faculty Schedule. A fringe benefit package is available.
