The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position as Chair of the Sustainable Interior Environments Department, School of Graduate Studies.

The School is dedicated to advancing research in the creative industries and fostering collaboration and a dialogue that links faculty and students to outstanding professionals and practitioners. 

The Sustainable Interior Environments (SIE) Department in the School of Graduate Studies, founded in 2010, has now graduated three classes. This Department, which offers the Master of Arts degree, is the only graduate or undergraduate program in sustainability at FIT and is the only design-based graduate sustainability program in the SUNY system. The SIE program, which focuses on applied research, introduced 16 completely new courses to the graduate school at FIT; each course was created and is taught by leading experts in the sustainability design field today. The interdisciplinary curriculum covers a range of areas critical to this rapidly evolving field, and provides data and analysis relevant to professional, institutional, governmental and academic entities engaged in related work. 

Job Description:

The School of Graduate Studies seeks a full-time faculty member to chair and lead the Sustainable Interior Environments Program. The ideal candidate will be a leader in the field of sustainable design with a global perspective and understanding. The candidate should demonstrate expertise in all areas of the field, including architecture, interior design, LEED and rating systems strategy, and preservation and existing buildings technology and should be skilled in integrating various components related to the field into innovative projects. The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree and have made a significant contribution to the field through publications, conference presentations, invited lectures, and professional meetings. The candidate will have a network of contacts across the industry and in relevant organizations, such as the American Institute of Architects, American Society of Interior Designers, the Association of Preservation Technology, and US Green Building Council, and will be capable of mobilizing those contacts for the benefit of the Department, the School of Graduate Studies, and the College.

The candidate will have strong experience in academic leadership, including previous positions as a department chair, director, or manager in some capacity. The ideal candidate will also have a successful record in teaching, thesis advisement, curriculum building, and mentoring advanced students. The candidate will be skilled in working with a small group of peers also serving as department chairs in the School of Graduate Studies and will be prepared to serve on school-wide committees as necessary. In addition to having significant professional ability, the candidate must commit to advancing the department in ways that align with the goals of the FIT strategic plan for 2020. Candidates should have a terminal degree in the field, significant industry experience (6+ years), significant teaching experience at the graduate level (3+ years) and significant academic leadership experience, ideally as a department chair or director.

Preference will be given to candidates with relevant publications and/or research projects.

  • Demonstrate ability to develop and deliver course content on sustainable design and related subjects in studio and classroom settings.
  • Demonstrate fluency with state-of-the-art technology and specialized equipment necessary in the classroom environment.
  • Demonstrate a capacity for mentoring and leading advanced students through an intense and empowering curriculum.
  • Demonstrate passion for the work and ability to communicate effectively.

Learning Enrichment

  • Demonstrate a passion for learning with the ability to inspire interest, curiosity, and creativity in advanced students.
  • Demonstrate the use of a variety of instructional delivery methods that foster critical thinking and creative problem solving for industry and institutional partners.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary and experiential learning approaches.
  • Demonstrate the vision to build and advance the department through enhanced curricular approaches and regular assessment.

  • Demonstrate the ability to serve as a college representative on matters related sustainability and issues related to the department and its mission.
