The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position as Chair of the Art Market Department, School of Graduate Studies.

The Art Market department in the School of Graduate Studies at FIT is unique in its focus and mix of theory and practice. Established in the 1980s, it was one of the first programs in the nation to specialize in the business of art and remains one of few graduate programs in the field. The Art Market MA trains students for professional careers in art galleries and auction houses, and in such related fields as corporate curatorship, public art administration, and art market services. The curriculum includes gallery design and management as well as exhibition planning and design, with classes focused on modern and contemporary art history, as well as specific computer applications for the art world. Faculty members specialize in such areas as gallery ownership and management, marketing, appraisal, and art law, and bring years of professional experience to the classroom. Frequent guest speakers and field trips offer vivid insights into the New York art market, along with valuable networking opportunities.
The curriculum integrates comprehensive studies with practical experience in creating an actual exhibition. In this unique feature of the program, students are the curators of an off-campus gallery exhibition, handling every aspect of the process, from selecting the artists and venue to mounting the show and designing the catalogue and website. Students are also required to complete an internship and a qualifying paper. FIT is ideally located in Chelsea, a leading contemporary art center, with hundreds of galleries in easy reach of campus; other resources for the department include the Museum at FIT and the Special Collections of the Gladys Marcus Library.
The School of Graduate Studies seeks a full-time faculty member to chair the Art Market Department. The ideal candidate will be an active leader in the field with a global perspective and understanding. The candidate should demonstrate expertise in all areas of the field, including modern and contemporary art history, art business, gallery management and operations, and copyright and fair use, and should be skilled in integrating various components related to the field into innovative projects. The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree and have made a significant contribution to the field through publications, conference presentations, invited lectures, and professional meetings. The candidate will have a network of contacts across the industry and in relevant museums, as well as organizations, such as the College Art Association and Art Table. The candidate will be capable of mobilizing those contacts for the benefit of the Department, the School of Graduate Studies, and the College.
The candidate will have strong experience in academic leadership, including previous positions as a department chair, director, or manager in some capacity. The ideal candidate will also have a successful record in teaching, thesis advisement, curriculum building, and mentoring advanced students. The candidate will be skilled in working with a small group of peers also serving as department chairs in the School of Graduate Studies and will be prepared to serve on school-wide committees as necessary. In addition to having significant professional ability, the candidate must commit to advancing the department in ways that align with the goals of the FIT strategic plan for 2020. Candidates should have a terminal degree in the field, significant industry experience (6+ years), significant teaching experience at the graduate level (3+ years) and significant academic leadership experience, ideally as a department chair or director.
Preference will be given to candidates with significant publications and/or research projects.
