Assistant Professor of Engineering
The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering at the University of San Diego (USD) invites applications for a cluster of faculty positions in engineering associated with a funded National Science Foundation grant initiative IUSE / Professional Formation of Engineers: Revolutionizing Engineering Departments.
Our multi-year project has a goal of developing "Changemaking" Engineers. The project addresses how an engineering education that integrates traditional technical skills, enhanced social awareness and an integrated professional spine produces connected learning that empowers graduates to improve society - by practicing engineering within the contexts of social justice, peace, humanitarian advancement, and sustainable practices. http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1519453
It is anticipated that these faculty members will work as an interdisciplinary team with other USD faculty members to build opportunities for faculty/student collaborations and promote interdisciplinary strength related to changemaking engineering within engineering and across campus. We endeavor to build a cohort of teacher-scholars who will advance the reputation of USD.
USD provides a high quality undergraduate education by emphasizing small classes and a high level of faculty-student interaction. The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering has recently ranked among the top 15 programs at non-Ph.D. granting institutions by U.S. News and World Report. The school currently houses undergraduate degrees in engineering (general with developing focus areas in software engineering, sustainability, and bioengineering), electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and industrial & systems engineering. We also anticipate launching an MS degree in cyber security this year. Candidates should have technical expertise in a disciplinary area associated with the degrees offered.
We have a preference for hiring at the assistant professor level, although other academic ranks, including professors of practice, will be considered. We anticipate that these positions will start in the fall of 2016.
The successful candidates will:
• hold a Ph.D. in an engineering, engineering education, computing, or a related discipline,
• have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research, and mentoring undergraduates, and
• have demonstrated the capability of contributing to the goals of the NSF-RED project.
