The Pre-Health Advisor (PHA) supports students seeking entry into graduate programs in the health professions and allied health professions. The PHA is the primary academic advising for students in the College’s Health Science program, an interdisciplinary major designed to prepare students for entry into graduate programs of allied health (e.g. physical and occupational therapy, physician assistant). The PHA also provides support for students in all other majors pursuing a graduate program in the health professions (e.g. medical, dental, veterinary) or allied health professions. The PHA will help each student identify suitable professional schools, assist with application preparation, hold committee interviews for applicants, write letters of recommendation, maintain a confidential file for each applicant, and identify internship and volunteer/shadowing opportunities for students interested in health professions or allied health professions. The PHA will represent the College’s pre-health programs at various campus events, such as admissions and open houses. The PHA will attend meetings of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) annually.  The direct supervisor of the PHA is the Dean of the School of Science. The PHA receives academic and professional direction from the Pre-Health Programs Board, comprised of faculty and other academic staff.

Experience and Qualifications:

A candidate for the position should be familiar with the different health professions to which students seek entrance; experience in one of the health professions and a background in counseling or advising are desirable.   A candidate must demonstrate an ability to collaborate with students, faculty, deans, and advising professionals across campus, as well as admissions personnel at various professional schools. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree, but a master’s degree is preferred.
