Vice President for Research
Washington State University (WSU) seeks to hire an outstanding, strategic, energetic, talented, and collegial individual to provide institution-wide leadership for the University’s nationally and internationally renowned research enterprise. The individual hired will initiate and implement activities that further enhance the growing momentum and eminence of WSU in innovative and transformational research and scholarship across a wide range of academic disciplines and will foster creativity, rigor, intellectual curiosity, and synergies throughout the research enterprise.

The Office of Research, under the direction of the Vice President for Research, oversees the research enterprise for the Washington State University system, including its four campuses, its research centers and research stations throughout the state, as well as 20 core labs and facilities on the Pullman campus. Among its large number of high quality and impactful research programs, WSU has exceptional research strengths in: Agricultural and Plant Sciences, Biological and Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Global Animal Health, and Environmental Sciences and Clean Energy Technologies. According to the National Science Foundation rankings (2009), WSU is ranked 69th among all universities and colleges in the United States for research and development expenditures; 57th among all public universities; and 18th among all universities without a medical school.

The Vice President for Research will have the opportunity to profoundly and significantly impact research, scholarship, and creative activities throughout the WSU system. The Vice President reports directly to the President and serves as the principal institutional research advisor to the President and the Provost, in addition to being a key member of the WSU leadership team.
The Vice President for Research will guide the University’s research mission and research-related strategic planning and direction; anticipate and promote research opportunities for faculty; uphold an institutional environment that fosters excellence in research and scholarship; develop financial strategies that support and benefit research; and assures legal compliance with proper and ethical research practices.
