Detailed Job Description

The Financial Aid Counselor at MSU Denver serves an essential educational function of the University as it works closely with the strategic enrollment management initiatives including recommending, establishing, and administering procedures and policies related to delivery of aid to students in order for students to achieve their University degrees. This position manages the Banner financial aid communications system for the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships (OFA&S). Oversees the office website for the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarship Center as well as the Banner self-service system for students. This position will load FAFSA correction files daily and update the production manager programming for the office on a daily basis. This position will also handle the EDE Express system within the office in regards to researching students’ files and reports to help complete students’ files. Responsible for all outgoing email and paper communication to students. Serves on the Return of Fund team. This position represents the OFA&S at various University recruitment, orientation and general functions. Counsels and assists students, parents and the MSU Demver community regarding the financial aid application process, eligibility, need analysis, student budgets, packaging and disbursement policies and procedures. The incumbent works with the management team to develop and recommend policies and implementation procedures for institutional, State and Federal financial aid programs. All duties require monitoring and keeping current on State and Federal regulations and office policies and procedures in order to assure accurate and efficient release of information and program compliance.


50% The incumbent instructs students and parents regarding the financial aid process, eligibility, need analysis, budgeting, packaging, awarding and repayment policies and procedures. The incumbent counsels students with regard to individual situations as well as general financial aid policies.

10% The incumbent is responsible for the daily loading of FAFSA correction files and coordinating the production manager system.

10% The incumbent is responsible for outgoing email and paper communications to students on a daily basis.

10% The incumbent will be responsible for EDE express and students’ files.

10% The incumbent will serve on the Return of Fund team.

5% The incumbent represents the Office of Financial Aid at various University functions, including recruitment events and Orientation sessions.

5% The incumbent is responsible for the web design and maintenance for the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarship Center as well as the Banner self-service web for students.

The daily work schedule for this position will accommodate evening counseling hours.

Bilingual language(Spanish/English) – if you speak Spanish, you may be asked to counsel parents and/or students on financial aid processes.

Required Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree.
One year of financial aid experience.
Experience collaborating with others to create and implement a project, program or task.
The ability to work during the evening.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience using Banner Financial Aid Software.
Experience with web updating.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Detail oriented.
Ability to handle numerous complex and routine tasks simultaneously.
Demonstrated experience in successfully promoting multicultural and diversity initiatives for improved student retention.
Bilingual language(Spanish/English).
