Detailed Job Description

The Technology Licensing Associate will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, marketing, and licensing inventions made by Washington State University (WSU) inventors. The Technology Licensing Associate will represent the WSU Office of Commercialization in working with inventors, outside patent counsel and industry to ensure that the commercial potential of WSU inventions is preserved and that the quality and quantity of the intellectual property portfolio is enhanced. Primary responsibilities will include the negotiation of license agreements and the monitoring of existing agreements for contractual compliance. Additional responsibilities will include the preparation and negotiation of material transfer agreements, confidential disclosure agreements, and inter-institutional agreements. The Technology Licensing Associate will work closely with WSU inventors and administrators, outside patent counsel, licensing attorneys, and industry representatives in the conduct of technology transfer activities.

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, physical science or engineering with a broad technical knowledge base AND two (2) years experience in technology transfer. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience. A doctoral degree may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications

An advanced degree in business, engineering or science.
A background in marketing, sales, licensing, negotiating and/or business development, and significant record of successful technology transfer in areas of physical sciences, engineering, software and devices.
An additional two (2) years experience working with intellectual properties administration or technology transfer.
Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to intellectual properties within a research university setting.
Good knowledge of U.S. patent, copyright and contract law.
Knowledge of current trends in university/industry technology transfer.
