The Sustainability Manager will direct the Office of Sustainability and will coordinate and help integrate sustainable policies, programs and practices where possible in college operations, academic programs, student and faculty research, campus and community outreach, and civic engagement initiatives. Sustainability and resource conservation are core values and strategic priorities of Bates, and the manager will work closely with administrators, faculty, staff, and students to identify, develop, implement, and promote collaborative strategies that advance these core values and strategic priorities.

 

Primary responsibilities include planning, developing and coordinating long- and short-range sustainability programs such as: recycling and waste reduction, resource conservation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy behavioral management, and a variety of student staffed Eco-Rep programs; promoting a culture of sustainability among students, faculty, and staff through outreach, education and periodic communications; identifying and prioritizing areas for institutional sustainability initiatives; engaging with institutional leaders to foster sustainability broadly across campus departments and offices; developing measures to monitor success of programs and annual reporting of progress; networking with peer institutions to maintain current working knowledge of sustainability best practices on college campuses; and representing Bates at regional and national sustainability meetings, conferences or events.

TASKS, DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Administer campus wide recycling, waste reduction, and resource conservation programs and activities.

  2. Develop, identify goals and measures, implement and evaluate comprehensive sustainability programs as part of an overall campus-wide sustainability plan that reflects Bates’ environmental mission statement and strategic priorities.

  3. Work with Bates Committee on Environmental Responsibility, providing organizational support by coordinating and tracking the initiatives championed by the Committee, including the Bates Climate Action Plan and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with the goal of a climate neutral college footprint.

  4. Supervise students and coordinate activities for the Bates Eco-Reps program to help develop environmental leadership abilities and oversee green office certification program, periodic newsletter publication, environmental symposium or sustainability forum, and other Eco-Rep initiatives.

  5. Plan and administer Sustainability program budgets.  Work with Advancement and Office of External Grants to identify and seek grant funding, corporate partnerships, donor funding and other opportunities to leverage campus resources and further support campus sustainability efforts.

  6. Work with Facility Services staff, faculty, students, and others to capture measureable data on sustainability indicators, including greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, waste/recycling, transportation, and education and outreach programs on campus. Track and report on the college’s overall environmental footprint and achievement of sustainability goals using a system such as Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS).

  7. Work closely with the college’s Energy Manager on college environmental priorities especially on the demand side of energy behavioral management, including energy savings competitions and educational efforts.

  8. Collaborate with the Communications Office and others for internal and external communications and marketing of campus sustainability efforts; serve as a campus spokesperson on sustainability issues.  Publish an annual report on sustainability program activities, goals and accomplishments. Oversee the content, design, and maintenance of the campus sustainability program website

  9. Develop and coordinate outreach events (e.g. Campus Sustainability Fair, Sustainability Summit), including identifying sponsors and speakers, event planning, and logistics

  10. Collaborate with campus stakeholders such as Capital Planning and Projects, Purchasing, Residential and Student Life programs, and others as appropriate to infuse sustainability principles into campus short- and long-range planning, operations, building design (using LEED or ANSI standards), and construction.

  11. Interact with counterparts at other universities and colleges, especially regional peers, for collaboration, support and guidance on the many facets of environmental sustainability in higher education.  Represent the college at professional events, conferences and meetings on sustainability.

  12. Establish and/or strengthen sustainable practices across the campus and actively promote collaboration among the areas of teaching, research, campus operations, student life, and community service.  

  13. Work with faculty and academic leadership to provide input on incorporating sustainability into the curriculum; serve as a guest lecturer in sustainability-oriented courses.  Mentor students and advise on student projects

  14. Build effective partnerships with the Environmental Studies program, Harward Center for Community Partnerships, student groups, and various other constituents through outreach and education to engage faculty, staff, and students in programs that promote the college’s sustainability goals.

  15. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required:    Qualified applicants will have a BS or BA in an environmental related field and three years of experience working on environmental and sustainability issues. Must have excellent communication skills including writing, public speaking and computer skills.  The ability to communicate, work with, and inspire a very ethnically and socio-economically diverse population is essential.  Must possess the ability to creatively overcome obstacles and be skilled at working with a diverse community. Must be able to work independently, but also be an excellent team player and collaborator. Demonstrated record of success in executing sustainable programs and initiatives is a must

Desired:    Previous experience in a collegiate environment, master’s degree in sustainability related field of study.
