The Financial Aid Counselor reports to the Senior Associate Director of Financial Aid. She/He works with students and families on financial aid opportunities. The Counsleor position is crucial in the recuitment and yield of students to Saint Mary's. The Counsleor reviews financial aid applications, and packages students' financial aid awards.The Counselor also counsels students and families on financial options available to assist with college costs. She/he designs, prepares and conducts financial aid presentations for student groups. The Counselor will also assist in the creation of financial aid communications through Social Media.  Additionally, she/he works with and provides assistance and support to Latino students and families.

1. Demonstrate knowledge of institutional, federal and state financial aid programs, including regulations, law and policy. The Financial Aid Counselor must have a thorough knowledge of the concept and calculation of needs analysis, student budgets, financial aid packaging, and professional judgement. The Counsleor must use a holistic approach in counseling students so that the financial aid process is completely transparent to students and families. They must help with family financial planning and budgeting using the options available at the college. This person must work independently on assignments that are varied and complex; processes and maintains confidential records.

2. Provides counseling assistance to students, families, and the outside community regarding financial aid opportunities. Works to assist students/families on an individual basis and also designs, promotes, and conducts community events. The Counsleor represents the college at all college related events.

3. Works in a highly collaborative and culturally diverse environment, develops effective relationships within other areas of the College.  Attends workshops and meetings consistent with professional development as well as on-going College training to meet the growing demands of the position. 

4. Creates comunication pieces to provide current information to students and their families concerning financial aid, scholarship search and financial literacy The Counselor must seek ways of improving communication that meet the needs to students. This person should be cuurent in all forms of social media.

Experience and Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree Required
: A minimum of one year of experience providing high quality financial aid related experience; experience in similar setting or in higher education. Must have experince with customer service.
Skills and Abilities: Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem solving skills required. Strong interpersonal, verbal and written skills; working knowledge of federal, state and local policies and legislation related to student financial aid; fluency in Spanish; knowledge of issues relating to Latino students in higher education; ability to handle complex phone inquiries and interact in a calm and supportive manner with diverse and culturally diverse group of faculty, staff, students and families.
Other Requirements: Work load will require some weekend and evening work. Some travel required for professional development and recruiting events.
