Detailed Job Description
The Systems Engineer's role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the information systems that support core organizational functions. This is achieved by developing, monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all networked software and associated operating systems. The Systems Engineer will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues in order to maximize the benefit of IT systems investments.
Essential Functions, Major Duties, and /or Accountabilities:
- Determines use requirements, analyzes, designs, implements, tests, and debugs complex software systems without technical assistance from a supervisor. 15%
- Creates new systems that can effectively preserve investments in leverage legacy/existing systems where applicable. 20%
- Provides software systems that integrate with new and existing information systems throughout the university and are robust, secure, and reliable. 20%
- Provides continuous system analysis and development for existing systems, foreseeing changes in technology that might impact those existing systems. 15%
- Maintains the proper interoperability of multiple applications and server, including configuration, patching/upgrading when required. 10%
- Coordinates and collaborates with systems administration, network engineering, business application, and database administration function to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of enterprise applications to meet business demands. 10%
- Performs other job related duties as assigned. 10%
Graduation from an accredited institution with a Bachelors degree in Information Technology or a related field OR any combination of education and experience totaling nine years. One current industry recognized certification that is directly related to the administering and maintaining enterprise level IT systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge and experience in customer service, team oriented, collaborative environment; highly self-motivated with the ability to learn quickly.
- Knowledge of TCP/IP, application network protocols, firewall management, operating system configuration, anti-virus software, and relational database(s).
- In depth knowledge with troubleshooting hardware and software problems and the researching of technical issues.
- In depth knowledge with SunGard/SCT Banner, MS Active Directory, SQL, PL/SQL, SQL Server, and MS Access.
- In depth knowledge with operating systems and their standard applications, services, and processes such as web servers, E-mail services, file systems, performance management, back-up/restore, and access control.
- Advanced knowledge of Enterprise Identity Management Systems and related systems.
- Skill in at least four of the following: Linux, Active Directory, MySQL, Oracle, Apache, Windows OS, and Novell Netware.
- Skill in developing strategies for improving the effectivness and efficiency of existing systems or processes.
- Skill in writing documentation, capacity planning, system design, customer service, technical training, security audits, mentoring of junior team members.
- Advanced skill in data automation, system integration and programming.
- Skill in strategic planning.
- Ability to read, write, and interpret technical documentation and procedures pertaining to systems and application management.
- Ability to present ideas in a user-friendly language.
- Ability to collaborate with other systems administrators and technical personnel on campus on technical issues.
- Ability to communicate with all members of the campus community including faculty, staff, and students regarding technical and non-technical issues.
- Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
- Ability to perform business process analysis on campus systems and processes.
- Ability to thing logically, resolve problems, identify tasks, and develop project plans.
