Detailed Job Description

The part-time Museum Educator for School + Teacher Programs teaches
K-12 students at the RISD Museum and on pre-visits in schools. The educator works primarily with Providence public school students in one or two-part visits and in partnership programs, as well as occasional school groups through the Dig the Museum Expansion program from outside Providence. The Museum Educator uses existing lessons and develops new lessons to facilitate meaningful interaction around works of art and design; collaborates with K-12 teachers to shape goals and arrange visit logistics along with team that includes other part-time educators and Education Department staff. The educator also teaches and assists in professional development workshops held for K-12 educators and occasionally participates in docent class trainings. Daily responsibilities include communication with teachers, research of works of art and other topics, preparation of lesson plans and all materials for visits, transportation arrangements, outreach to schools and teachers, and data entry. The educator participates in and contributes to Education Department discussions around topics related to learning, teaching and working with Museum visitors.  


Bachelors degree required; a MA or MFA in art history, studio art, humanities or education preferred. Studio art or creative hands-on experience helpful. Experience teaching K-12 students and/or working with teachers and adults in either museums or in classroom settings preferred. Strong administrative skills and organizational abilities required. Proficiency in Spanish desired. Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, flexibility, sense of humor, broad cultural experience and personal warmth are essential. Excellent written, communication and research skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with culturally diverse audiences from young children to adults.
