Detailed Job Description

The Department of Human Development at Washington State University within the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor with scholarly expertise in development during early childhood. The successful candidate will join a cadre of Human Development department faculty who have combinations of teaching expectations and influential research/outreach agendas via Extension and/or community partnerships. In addition, the candidate will join the faculty in the interdisciplinary Prevention Science doctoral program. This innovative PhD program integrates theories and methodology from the disciplines of prevention science, human development, psychology, education, economics, communication, epidemiology, and public policy ( Our dynamic faculty and graduate students conduct cutting edge projects in both the generation of research-based knowledge and its translation into effective programs and policies that positively affect the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Required Qualifications

Earned Ph.D. in human development or related area such as developmental psychology, prevention science, health promotion, family science, education, or sociology by the date of hire; and at least one year (12 months) of research experience focused on early childhood.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence of ability to conduct programmatic, high-quality research;Evidence of ability for quality teaching in a higher education environment; Evidence of potential to acquire external research funding; Strong research training in a variety of methodological and/or analytical approaches; Evidence of effective oral and written communication skills; and Developmental perspective with expertise in one or more of the following areas: a)Social/emotional development during early childhood; b) School readiness;
c) Cognitive/neurological development; d)Parent-child relationships; e)
Developmental implications of contextual influences (family, non-familial care, etc.); and Expertise in program development, implementation, and evaluation.

Monthly Salary

Commensurate with qualifications, training, and experience.

Additional Information

Based on this area of expertise, the candidate will also develop and teach two high-quality courses in the undergraduate and graduate curriculum per semester on topics pertaining to development during early childhood, and will collaborate with colleagues on curriculum decisions. The candidate will advise graduate students, pursue internal and external funding, and participate in appropriate service activities expected of faculty at Washington State University. The candidate will be a fully integrated member of the Department of Human Development, which spans two campuses, and will actively contribute to the strategic goals of the department, including high-quality teaching, growth of the graduate program in Prevention Science, and increased acquisition of external funding for research.
The successful candidate will establish an independent program of scholarly research leading to refereed (i.e., peer-reviewed) scholarship related to any of the following areas: (a) social/emotional development; (b) school readiness; © cognitive/neurological development; (d) parent-child relationships; and (e) non-familial care/preschool experiences. In addition, we desire a candidate whose scholarly work has implications for prevention science as it relates to early childhood. Examples of this focus include, but are not limited to, expertise in program development, implementation, and evaluation; examination of risk/protective factors; and applied/translational research.
