Scholarly activity (approximately 75%): The faculty member will actively engage in and lead scholarly pursuits in association with the global health activities of the Allen School and its university, national, and international partners. This will include participation as a lead and collaborating scientist in the research and development projects of the Allen School in the high priority area of antimicrobial resistance. Emphasis is on understanding the emergence and transmission of antimicrobial resistance determinants within and between animal, human, or environmental reservoirs. A key component of this work will be modeling these processes and potential interventions to mitigate the emergence and spread of resistance. The successful candidate is expected to participate as both a principal and co-investigator on extramurally funded research programs. Publication of scholarly activity as a first or co-author is required, and manuscripts in top-tier scientific journals are highly valued.
Graduate and Professional Education (approximately 25%): The faculty member will actively engage in the education and training mission of the Allen School which encompasses professional veterinary medical education, graduate and post-doctoral education, and short-term training for collaborative partners. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to student mentorship and serve as a member of trainee committees in the Immunology and Infectious Disease Program. This may include development and delivery of course material, guest lectures and seminars and other education activities consistent with the candidate’s interest and expertise.
A doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, DVM, MD or equivalent) is required with a minimum of two years post-doctoral research experience in epidemiological modeling and evidence of research publication in high impact international journals.
Appointments at the Associate and full Professor require a strong record for both publication and extramural funding.
Preferred qualifications include a record of modeling and testing interventions, collaboration with state, national, and/or international health organizations, and experience with work and travel in low- and middle-income countries. A successful record of teaching at the graduate and/or professional medical levels, and success in working in multidisciplinary collaborative programs is strongly desired. DESCRIPTION OF POSITIONS: This is a full-time faculty position in the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health (Allen School). Rank is at the level of Assistant, Associate or full Professor; position may be tenured, tenure-track, or clinical track depending on qualifications and scholarly focus. Residency in the U.S. is not a requirement for this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The position is full time (12 month), and the successful candidate will have the following division of responsibilities.
Academic Units: The Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health’s (www.globalhealth.wsu.edu) mission is to improve human health and well-being by control of infectious diseases at the animal-human interface, providing solutions to health challenges worldwide through detection of pathogens, control of disease transmission and vaccine development. The Allen School integrates faculty across disciplinary boundaries and seeks to change the status quo of disease burden at a global level. Research programs in the Allen School are focused on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, genomics and ecology of antimicrobial resistance, zoonotic pathogens and/or pathogens that constrain health and human development in resource poor countries, as well as the health of populations in developed countries. These programs have both laboratory and field-based components. Disease surveillance and associated laboratory capacity building is a central part of the mission of the Allen School, and the Washington Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory and the CDC are key partners in achieving that mission.
